The Royal Decree 1553 / 2005, of 23 December, which regulates the issuance of the national identity document and electronic signature certificates, allows citizens in Spanish through the national identity document identification of face-to-face and virtually, enabling their holders to digitally sign electronic documents with the same legal validity as that has the handwritten signature on paper.

The incorporation into the national document of identity authentication and signature certificates makes that this document constitutes in an electronic certificate recognized, which generated safe electronic instruments that provide the same integrity, authenticity and validity than that obtained by physical means.

Incorporate electronic certificates is, as far as these certificates refers, national identity document must conform to the General principles of law 59/2003, of 19 December, electronic signature, in which a reference is made expressly to the maximum period of validity which must have electronic certificates and, consequently which incorporates the national identity document.

In this respect, by virtue of the provisions of the sixth final provision of the law 9/2014, of 9 may, telecommunications-General, entered a change in law 59/2003, of December 19, which has resulted in an extension of the period of validity of the electronic certificates, which have passed have a validity of up to four years to five.
