The State degree of theatre professor is defined by the reference of professional activities and certification in Appendix I to this Order.
It is listed on the National Register of Professional Certifications at Level III of the Interdepartmental Certification Level nomenclature.
The state diploma of theatre professor is part of the European higher education system by implementing the European system of capitalizable and transferable education units. The graduation takes the acquisition of 120 European credits whose number and terms of attribution are defined by the regulation of the studies.

  • Chapter I: Obtaining the State degree of theatre professor after a training

      Access to training prepared for the State degree of theatre professor is open in the following ways:
      1° Access to initial training to the State degree of theatre teacher is conditional on the success of an entrance examination, open to candidates justifying the following three conditions:


      - to be a national professional graduate of actor;
      - justifying an initial experience of actor or tray that can be attested by at least four weeks of rehearsal and five pills;
      - and enroll in training at the State degree of theatre teacher in the two academic years following the attainment of the national higher professional actor's degree.


      2° Access to continuing education to the state degree of theatre teacher is conditional on the success of an entry examination, open to candidates who can meet one of the following conditions:


      - justify, in the five years preceding the registration to the training, a professional practice as a comedian or director for a period of at least two years, which can be attested by forty-eight stamps over two years or five hundred seven hours over that period;
      - justify, in the five years preceding the registration to the training, an educational experience in theatre as an employee for a period of at least two years, at a rate of eight hours per week at least thirty weeks per year or their equivalent in annual hours.


      To access the initial or ongoing training prepared for the state degree of theatre professor, candidates provide a curriculum vitae and a cover letter and transmit a file whose content is defined in the rules of procedure of the institution authorized to issue this diploma.
      By derogation from 2°, candidates who have obtained part of the degree by validation of the acquired experience, under the conditions set out in Chapter III of this Order, may be admitted directly in continuous training for non-validated teaching units and modules, as a result of an interview, depending on the accommodation possibilities of the institution.
      By derogation from 1° and 2°, candidates who have obtained part of the degree through the initial or continuing training for less than five years can be admitted directly in continuous training for non-validated teaching units and modules, in the light of a file traced to their training courses and their professional experience, following an interview, depending on the accommodation possibilities of the institution.
      After notice of a commission composed of at least three teachers of the institution, the director of the institution may authorize the registration of candidates who do not meet the conditions set out in 2° of this article to be admitted to the examination of continuing education.

      The institution is required to provide an interview to applicants who apply for it, upstream of their enrolment in the training or, where applicable, on the examination, to guide them and advise them on the paths of graduation, on the training courses that meet their needs and, in the case of candidates under continuing training, on the modalities for their training that are open to them.

      1° The initial training competition consists, after examination of the candidate's file, in an interview before a jury to assess his motivation.
      2° In-training examination includes a practical test followed by an oral test.
      The practical test consists of a collective work session, related to theatrical interpretation.
      The oral test consists of an interview on the motivation of the candidate, on elements of general and theatrical culture, from a text chosen by the candidate on a list of texts or works proposed by the establishment at the time of the trial.
      The trials take place before a jury whose composition is specified in Article 5 of this Order.
      The terms and conditions of the tests are determined by the regulation of the studies of the institution in accordance with the order.
      Applicants who meet the conditions defined in the first dash of 1° of Article 2 of this Order shall be entitled to a dispensation of the practical test.

      Juries of the competition or examination include at least:


      - the director of the establishment, president;
      - a teacher in the institution;
      - a comedian or an active director.


      Members of the jury are appointed by the director of the institution.

      Based on the results of the Initial Training Entry Competition and the Continuous Training Entry Examination, the Director of the Institution sets out the list of candidates admitted to initial or continuing training, based on the institution's capacity to host.

      Institutions must give each candidate, when they are registered for the examination, the rules of procedure and the rules of study.
      Each candidate who has been declared not received may obtain information on the reasons for the jury's decision.

    • Section 2: Organization of initial or continuing training Article 8 Learn more about this article...


      The training focuses on the teaching practice of theatrical game, theatrical and educational culture, and the professional environment. Its reference time is four hundred hours.
      Training courses are organized in five teaching modules:


      - pedagogy and public knowledge;
      - basics and developments of theatrical game;
      - knowledge of directories, game and dramaturgy;
      - transmission of knowledge or educational practice of theatrical game;
      - approach to the professional and territorial environment of the theatre.


      These modules are specified in the curriculum.

      The curriculum includes practical pedagogy courses in reception facilities (institutions offering training, creative or dissemination structures) at least some of which must give the trainee the opportunity to be placed in an active educational position. The organization, pedagogical monitoring and evaluation of the courses are placed under the responsibility of the institution authorized to issue the degree in which the candidate is enrolled in the training.
      They are the subject of a convention between the institution that delivers the degree and the hospitality structure that specifies the conditions of reception as well as the duration, schedule and description of the activities entrusted.
      In continuous training, practical pedagogy courses can take place for part in the exercise of the candidate's teaching activity. An external tutoring at its exercise facility is then put in place.

      Upon admission to training, the director of the institution validates the knowledge acquired in another framework, in the light of the record and the results at the competition or entrance examination. The validation of skills and knowledge can be done in the course of the course. The hourly volume corresponding to the lessons learned from the validations obtained is deducted from the duration of the training.
      The Director sets the duration and organization of the training for each candidate. It may also grant students a partial exemption to perform the practical pedagogy courses referred to in Article 9.
      In any case, the director of the institution shall decide after notice of a commission composed of at least three teachers of the institution.

      The state degree of theatre education is obtained when all modules are acquired.
      The teaching modules are subject to continuous evaluation, the terms and conditions of which are set out in the regulation of the studies of the institution with the exception of the pedagogical practice module whose terms are defined in sections 12 and 13.

      The pedagogical practice module is subject to continuous evaluation and terminal evaluation. The terminal evaluation consists of an oral examination covering:


      - a file developed by the candidate on a subject related to his professional teaching practice;
      - his return to a jury under Article 13 of this Order.


      Continuous evaluation and terminal evaluation each translate into a rating from 0 to 20.
      The overall rating of the pedagogical practice module is the result of the average of these two notes, the continuous evaluation note counts 70% of the overall rating.
      The module is acquired when the candidate has obtained at least 10 out of 20 at the global grade.

      The final assessment jury includes at least:


      - the director of the establishment, president;
      - a teacher from another higher education institution or a teacher who holds the state degree of theatre professor or the certificate of fitness for the functions of a professor of drama or a member of the employment framework of territorial professors of artistic education;
      - a director or deputy director of a conservatory classified by the State, or a professor in charge of direction within a conservatory classified by the State;
      - a comedian or an active director.

      The director of the institution authorized to issue the diploma shall determine the list of candidates received in the light of the results of the evaluations.
      He gives candidates not received an attestation specifying the modules acquired, as well as the corresponding European credits.

  • Chapter II: Obtaining the State Diploma of Theatre Professor following a Test Exam Article 15 Learn more about this article...


    The state degree of theatre teacher can be obtained after a test examination. The tests are set out in Appendix II to this Order. The director of the institution authorizes applicants who apply to the examination, within the limits of the institution's hospitality capabilities, as long as they certify:


    - an employee activity, as a three-year actor or director, over a ten-year period preceding the application. Each of these three years can be justified by a minimum of five hundred seven hours or forty-three cachets;
    - either an employee's activity as a teacher of theatrical practice, two whole school years in the five years preceding the registration, at least eight hours a week over thirty weeks a year, or their equivalent in annual hours.


    The director of the institution sets out the list of candidates admitted to the examination.

    The test assessment procedures are defined in Appendix II to this Order.
    The jury of the examination is composed identically to that of Article 13.
    The director of the authorized institution shall issue the state degree of theatre professor to candidates who have passed the test or the tests presented before the jury.

    1° Candidates with a national professional actor's degree, a degree in theatrical studies or a master's degree in the field of theatre are exempted from the general and theatrical culture event.
    2° From the test of interpretation:


    - candidates with a national professional actor diploma;
    - candidates justifying an employee activity, as an actor or director, of 3 years that can be justified by a minimum of 129 stamps or 1,521 hours over a 10-year period prior to the candidate's registration for the examination on trial.

    The State degree of theatre education may be granted by the validation of the acquired experience to the candidates who justify the competences acquired in the exercise of employee, non-employed or voluntary activities, on a continuous or non-permanent basis, in direct relation to the activities and skills defined by the reference of the degree, of a cumulative duration of at least three years, of which at least the equivalent of two years of teaching of the practice will be

    Higher education institutions empowered to grant the state degree of theatre professor must organize sessions to obtain this degree by validation of the acquired experience.
    The application booklet for the validation of the acquired experience, consisting of the corresponding CERFA document and the necessary parts for the examination of the application, is filed by the candidate with the organizing institution. It is responsible for the instruction of the application files for validation of the acquired experience and the organization of the validation panels.
    The applicant in possession of a certificate of admissibility shall transmit to the establishment a file for the validation of the acquis. The establishment may offer support to the applicant for the preparation of this file.

    The jury for the validation of the acquired experience of the state degree of theatre professor in charge of deciding on the applications for validation of the acquired experience is chaired by the director of the institution authorized to issue this degree, or his representative. In addition to his president, he understands at least:


    - a professor who holds the state degree of theatre professor or the certificate of fitness for the functions of a professor of dramatic art, or a teacher who belongs to the framework of employment of professors of artistic teaching in a classified conservatory;
    - a mayor, or a representative of a public institution of intercommunal cooperation, or an elected representative of a territorial community in the jurisdiction of which a conservatory is classified by the State, or their representative whom they designate;
    - a comedian or an active director.


    The list of members of the jury is decided by the director of the institution authorized to issue the state diploma of theatre professor.

    The jury for the validation of the experience of the state degree of theatre professor may decide on the award of the diploma to the candidates, on the basis of the examination of the application file for the validation of the acquired experience, an interview and, where applicable, a professional, real or reconstituted status, in accordance with the assessment procedures set out in annex III to this decree.
    The director of the institution issues the degree to the candidates received.
    Otherwise, it may validate the candidate's experience for a portion of the knowledge, skills and skills contained in the diploma repository and shall decide on those who, within five years of the notification of his decision, must be subject to further control and a new evaluation by the jury for the graduation by the validation of the acquired experience.
    He issued a certificate specifying the teaching units and modules obtained, as well as the corresponding European credits.
    Candidates may apply for continuing education to obtain unvalidated education units and modules under the conditions set out in Article 3 of this Order.
    They may, as a result of this training, submit their file again to the jury for the validation of the acquired experience, or request a validation of the teaching units and modules in accordance with the provisions of Article 10 of this Order.

    Can be authorized to grant the State degree of theatre professor the national public institutions, public institutions of cultural cooperation and institutions of associative status, under the conditions set out below.

    The director of the institution who requests an authorization to issue the state degree of theatre professor addresses to the ministry responsible for culture a request for authorization including the following information:
    I. - Administrative and financial information:


    - name and address;
    - statutes;
    - presentation of management bodies;
    - name and quality of the leadership team members;
    - forecast operating budget for the next three fiscal years, income and expenditure and, where applicable, budgets for the last three fiscal years;
    - composition and organization of the administrative team;
    - organization chart of the institution, including how the educational trainings are coordinated within it;
    - description of all premises and equipment in teaching, computer and technical equipment used in teaching and made available to students.


    Institutions authorized to issue actor's national higher professional diploma are exempted from producing this part of the file, with the exception of information relating to the coordination of educational training.
    II. - Information on the organization of training courses and how to grant the diploma:


    - organization and content of the teachings, allowing to verify that they allow to acquire the general and professional knowledge and skills defined by the reference of the diploma;
    - any convention or draft convention necessary for the implementation of the training, including for practical training courses;
    - list and qualification of teachers constituting the educational team, modalities of recruitment;
    - the number of students, in initial and continuing training, with regard to the needs identified;
    - total costs and per student, amount of registration fees, amount of training fees, modalities to support the research of expenses for continuing training;
    - modalities for the orientation and positioning of candidates for entry into training, means of communication implemented for this purpose, criteria for the validation of the knowledge and skills acquired by candidates in the framework of previous trainings or professional practice as interpreter or teacher, criteria and modalities according to which the durations and organizations of the curriculum are defined;
    - by-laws of the establishment whose rules of procedure and by-laws of studies that describe and define, inter alia, the modalities of the examinations and examinations;
    - how to establish and operate a board of studies within the institution;
    - procedures for monitoring the professional integration of students in the three years following graduation;
    - modalities for the implementation of the validation procedure for the acquired experience, initial and continuing training sessions, modalities for the support of candidates for the development of their file.


    As part of the renewal of the empowerment, the dossier must be supplemented with elements relating to the success rate and the professional integration of students, to the educational achievements, and to clarify the possible changes proposed.

    Enabling is conditioned upon the intervention of teachers justifying a career or work that is authoritative or warranting at least five years of high-level teaching in theatre or holders of a French level II or I degree of the interdepartmental nomenclature of the levels of training or an equivalent foreign degree.
    Enabling is also conditioned to the respect, by the establishments, of the provisions of the decree in relation to the conditions of training and of obtaining the diploma laid down by theArticle D. 361-5 of the Education Code.

    Candidates to obtain a state degree of theatre professor following a test examination that may justify a certificate of eligibility issued by the prefect of the region, as defined by the amended decision of 4 March 2005 on the examination of the state diploma of the theatre on trial, are entitled to present themselves directly to the pedagogy test set out in Appendix II to this decree. This right is acquired for one session and must be implemented within three years of the publication of this Decree.

    METURAL AND REFERENCES OF ACTIVITY PREVUS TO THE ARTICLE 1ER OF THE PRESENT

    I. - Trade context


    A. - Definition


    State graduate theatre teachers are responsible for the transmission of dramatic art practices. Depending on the case, they ensure the teaching of the activities of awakening, initiation, the conduct of an initial learning, so the acquisition of the basic knowledge, know-how and know-how necessary to an autonomous practice of the students. They can be associated with the pre-professional training of students. In addition, they can lead internships or workshops, design and carry out activities to raise awareness of the theatre.
    Apart from their teaching activity, they must constantly question their artistic benchmarks by an artistic practice and by continuing professional training.
    They can also, with a specific and meaningful training, carry out activities of performer, director, author, adaptor of theatrical texts, playwright...


    B. - Types of structures involved in the trade


    The main practice of theatre teachers is:


    - in public educational institutions of music, dance and drama within the local authorities that offer a curriculum in the field of theatre;
    - in public or private associative schools and cultural structures, whether or not in connection with creation and dissemination structures (CDN, theatres, companies, MJC...).


    They may also provide teaching in university departments and institutions under the Ministry of National Education.


    C. - Employment and their definition


    In public institutions for the teaching of music, dance and drama within the local authorities, theatre teachers today have access to the framework of employment as a statutory teaching assistant. Their recruitment can also be carried out by contract. Currently, approximately seventy teachers exercise this function. The framework for the job of a specialist theatre teaching assistant is being created. The draft texts relating to this scheme provide that the State degree of theatre education is the required diploma for access to the external competition of this degree.
    In public structures, state graduate theatre teachers have a public service mission. They teach in connection with a professor of artistic teaching on their place of teaching or within the framework of a network. They can have within a department the responsibility of a class, from the awakening level to the third cycle. They contribute to the implementation of the project. They may be required to organize public presentations of their students' work independently. A career development in the territorial arts sector can lead them to gain access to the role of art teacher, especially through internal competitions.
    In institutions and educational structures that do not belong to the local authorities, recruitment is carried out in a contractual manner (CDD, CDI) under the degree, qualifications, skills and fame acquired.
    The organization of work is rhymed by the academic and academic years. The working time is defined by the status or contract of employment. With regard to specialist theatre teaching assistants, for a full-time job, the weekly teaching time is twenty hours.
    Theatre teachers can work in collaboration with artists from other sectors of the live show (music, dance, circus arts, street arts,...) and lead projects with various partners (patrimoine, public reading, general education, sociocultural sector, health and social sector...).


    D. - Place in the organization of the professional structure


    Teachers from the local authorities are recruited by an elected official (maire, president of a community of communes or a community of agglomeration, in particular) and are placed under the authority of the Director of Territorial Art Education.
    They ensure, as part of the training of students, the treatment of questions related to public presentations of the work they do (contact the technicians of the plateau, logistics, management...). They are associated with the definition of the educational project of the theatre department.
    Teachers from public or private associative schools and cultural structures are most often responsible for the educational and artistic activities and projects they conduct.


    II. - Professional activity and certification repository


    A. - Teaching students at different levels, profiles and ages


    1. Welcome and accompany a group of students.

    - adapt its pedagogy to audiences of different levels, profiles and ages.

    - to establish an assessment of the evolution of behaviours and acquisitions in line with the profiles and levels of each student;
    - guide the student to self-assessment;
    - animate the self-assessment of the group;
    - to help students find themselves in the living entertainment environment.

    ACTIVITY 3: Being active within the structure and/or the theatre department

    Being an actor of the establishment or structure project

    - In relation to the educational objectives of an institution, to the public who attend it (social and cultural context), to the partnerships it implements;
    - to ensure the implementation of the educational guidance scheme published by the Ministry responsible for culturemet;
    - support, as necessary, actions aimed at improving the material conditions of teaching;
    - to ensure that the working environment is respected and to alert the competent persons, if any, on the malfunctions;
    - participate in the development and drafting of the resulting information documents;
    - participate in the implementation of the project;
    - to associate itself with any prospective reflection; to adapt, where appropriate, to change, to reforms;
    - Participate, if any, in artistic events at the initiative of the institution.

    ACTIVITY 4: Being an actor of local cultural life

    Organize the relationship of the theatre class with various audiences

    - without any constraint of spectacular realization, develop meeting actions with different audiences (reading, space of texts) in various places.

    ANNEX II
    OBTENTION OF THE EDITORY PRODUCTION OF THE TREATMENT TO THE ISSUE OF AN EXAMEN ON OVERVIEW
    Nature of tests provided for in Article 15 of this Order


    I. - Proof of general culture and theatrical


    This trial consists of two sub-sets: a written trial and an interview with the jury.
    A. - Written evidence on the following main lines:


    - the contemporary history of public policies in favour of theatre in France;
    - theatrical practices of today (artistic, cultural) ;
    - the sociological and socio-economic realities of the theatrical sector.


    The candidate must, at the option, in this field of knowledge:


    - briefly address 4 questions (20 lines maximum for each);
    - write a test on a subject imposed;
    - to write a comment on a written document.


    Duration of the written test: 4 hours maximum.
    B. - Meeting with the jury on the following main lines:


    - the history and artistic and political foundations of the theatre: texts / techniques / forms / pedagogy / social function;
    - the place of theatre among the other arts: history of aesthetics, forms, artistic currents, reported to the evolutions of society.


    The interview will take place on the basis of a list of topics and books provided in the registration file.
    Duration of maintenance: 30 minutes maximum.
    The written test results in a score of 0 to 20. Maintenance results in a rating of 0 to 20. The overall rating of the general and theatrical culture test is the result of the average of these two notes, the score of the written test counting for 40% of the overall grade. The general and theatrical culture test is acquired when the candidate has obtained at least 10 of 20 at the global mark.


    II. - Pedagogy test


    This trial includes a working session and an interview with the jury.
    A. - Working session:
    The preparation time is 45 minutes, the maximum duration of the test is 45 minutes.
    The candidate conducts a work session with a group of 4 to 6 students on a dramatic text extract. Students are made available to the candidate by the institution. Their number and level is communicated to the candidate by the establishment at the time of preparation.
    The candidate presents 3 texts to the jury in advance of the preparation time. The jury chose a text among them. The pedagogy test covers the selected text.
    This session includes:


    - elements of physical preparation for theatrical work (respiratory, and/or vocal, and/or bodily work...), of a maximum duration of 15 minutes;
    - a dramatic approach to the proposed extract;
    - a reading of the scene or the proposed extract;
    - an interpretation time of at least 20 minutes that may include an improvisation time.


    The order of these working times is chosen by the candidate. It may sketch one or more of these working times.
    This session concerns all students, whether they are in a game situation or part of the group.
    B. - Meeting with the jury:
    The duration of the maintenance is 10 minutes.
    This interview, which takes place as a result of the work session, focuses on the observation and analysis of it.
    In addition to requests for clarification regarding the course of the session, including, where appropriate, an analysis of an individual and/or collective work situation, the jury invites the candidate to explain the major axes, describe what might be his or her extensions, to include it in a comprehensive educational and artistic perspective.
    Total duration of the pedagogy test: 55 minutes maximum; preparation time: 45 minutes.
    The pedagogy test results in a score of 0 to 20. This test is acquired when the candidate has obtained at least 10 out of 20.


    III. - Practical test of interpretation


    The candidate presents a brief theatrical sequence of his choice, lasting up to 5 minutes. He chose the text support of his interpretation using a particular technique such as: puppet, mask, clown, commedia dell'arte, tale, gestual theatre, vocal art...
    The candidate must have 4 copies of the text he submits to the members of the jury.
    This event is followed by an exchange with the candidate on his artistic experience.
    Total duration of the test: 20 minutes maximum
    The practical interpretation test results in a score of 0 to 20. This test is acquired when the candidate has obtained at least 10 out of 20.

    ANNEX III
    OBTENTION OF THE ASSESSMENT OF THE VALIDATION OF EXPERIENCE ACQUIS
    Assessment methods defined in Article 21 of this Order


    The candidate is assessed on the basis of a file and interview. As a result of the interview, the jury may decide to complete its information on the candidate's course through a professional, real or reconstituted situation. The jury defines the skills to be checked and the nature of the corresponding job placement that is communicated specifically to the candidate.
    As a result of the entire procedure, the jury decides whether or not to award all or part of the diploma.


    I. - Case


    The content of the file must establish the link between artistic and educational professional practice and the relevant skills. It includes:


    - diplomas, certificates of training, drama programs press articles, recordings...
    - supporting the candidate's educational experience: curriculum and level of students, certificates from school managers or employers, educational projects implemented.


    Through the various pieces that make up his file, the candidate must provide the elements to identify the level of his/her practice and theatrical experience, presenting his/her educational and artistic experiences as well as the elements illuminating his/her personal journey.
    The candidate's file must allow to assess his knowledge of the modalities for the development and structuring of a project of education in the course of the initial education cycles of the theatre as well as his ability to locate the role and missions of a state graduate in this project.
    The situation is assessed by two specialized reviewers of the discipline, designated by the Director of the authorized institution. They may exchange with the candidate on his or her benefit as a result of the performance.
    Examiners prepare an evaluation report to the jury.
    They do not participate in the jury's deliberations.
    The educational situation takes place in an institution in which the candidate carries out his teaching activity. In the event of impossibility, the authorized institution shall provide the candidate with the means to reconstitute a pedagogical situation. The candidate provides a course including an individual work phase and a collective work phase. This course concludes with an assessment prepared by the candidate during a brief interview with the examiners.
    Examiners strive to observe the candidate's teaching skills in the service of an artistic proposal, his relationship to the student and group, his ability to establish a relationship based on the requirement and listening, his ability to guide the work of the student or group and to develop their autonomy by soliciting the active competition of each individual.


    II. - Maintenance


    During the interview, the jury is committed to verifying the candidate's knowledge and ability to assess his/her activity and to design a critical approach to his/her experience, knowledge of the professional environment and his/her theatrical, pedagogical and more artistic culture.
    Duration of maintenance: 45 minutes maximum.


    III. - Work placement


    Depending on the case, the situation allows the candidate to assess his/her knowledge of styles and languages, his/her choice of repertoire and his/her theoretical knowledge.
    Duration: 45 minutes maximum, including the exchange with the candidate, one hour maximum in the event of a professional situation involving several components.
