INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF ATOMIC ENERGY Law 25,483. Amendments to Article VI and Article XIV of the Statute of the International Agency were approved.

Sanctioned: October 24, 2001.

Cast: November 19, 2001.

The Senate and Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Nation assembled in Congress etc. sanction with force of law:

ARTICLE 1 Appropriate the provisions of Article VI and Article XIV of the Status of the International ENERGY Organization ATOMICA, adopted by the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna AREPUBLIC OF AUSTRIA cuya on 1 October 1999, whose authenticated photocopy is part of this law. ARTICLE 2 Contact the national executive branch.

IN THE SESSION OF THE ARGENTINE CONGRESS, IN GOOD AIRES, TO THE VEINTICUATRO DIAS OF THE MONTH OF OCTOBER OF DOS MIL UNO.

AMENDING ARTICLE VI OF THE STATUS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY ORGANIZATION

I. Replace article VI, paragraph A, of the Statute of the Agency with the following:

"A. The Board of Governors shall be integrated as follows:

1. The outgoing Gover Board shall designate the eighteen most advanced members of the Board in atomic energy technology, including the production of basic materials, to be part of the Board, as follows:

North America 2

Latin America 2

Western Europe 4

Eastern Europe 2

Africa 2

Middle East and South Asia 2

Southeast Asia and the Pacific 1

Far East 3

2. The General Conference shall elect to be part of the Board of Governors:

(a) Twenty-two members, with due regard to the equitable representation in the Board, as a whole, of the members of the regions listed in paragraph 1 of this article, in order to ensure that the Board always includes in this category:

four representatives from the Latin American region,

four representatives from the Western European region,

three representatives from the Eastern European region,

five representatives from the African region, three representatives from the Middle East and South Asia region,

two representatives from the Southeast Asia and the Pacific region, and one representative from the Far East region

(b) Two more members from the following regions:

Western Europe

Eastern Europe

Middle East and South Asia

(c) One more member from the following regions:

Latin America

Eastern Europe

and,

II. At the end of article VI, add the following new paragraph:

"K. The provisions of paragraph A of this article, adopted by the General Conference on 1 October 1999, shall enter into force when the requirements referred to in article XVIII, paragraph C have been met and the General Conference has confirmed a list of all States Members of the Agency adopted by the Board, in both cases by ninety per cent of the members present and voting, in which each Member State is assigned to one of the regions referred to in paragraph 1 of this article. Subsequently, the Board may make changes to the list with the confirmation of the General Conference, backed in both cases by ninety per cent of the members present and voting and only after a consensus on the proposed change in the regions to which the change affects has been achieved."

Johnson, Director of the Legal Division of the Secretariat, hereby certify that the above text, of which the Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, Franco, English and Russian language versions are equally authentic, is that of the amendment to article VI of the Statute the Agency adopted by the General Conference of the Agency on 1 October 1999 and as provided for in paragraph C.

AMENDING ARTICLE XIV OF THE STATUS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY ORGANIZATION

In the first sentence of Article XIV, paragraph A, replace the annual word with the word "biennial".

On behalf of the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, I, Larry D. Johnson, Director of the Legal Division of the Secretariat, hereby certify that the text above, of which the Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish versions are equally authentic, is the amendment to article XIV of the Statute of the Agency adopted by the General Conference on 1 October 1999 in accordance with the provisions of paragraph C (i).
