The Housing (Right to Acquire) (Discount) Order 1997

The Secretary of State for the Environment, as respects England, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 17 of the Housing Act 1996(1) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
Citation, commencement and interpretation
1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Housing (Right to Acquire) (Discount) Order 1997 and shall come into force on 1st April 1997.
(2) In this Order “area” means a “local government area” as defined by section 270 of the Local Government Act 1972(2).
Amounts of Discount
2. The following amounts of discount are specified for the purpose of section 17(1)(a) of the Housing Act 1996 (the right to acquire)—
(a)£16,000 where a dwelling is in one of the areas specified in Schedule 1 to this Order;
(b)£13,500 where a dwelling is in one of the areas specified in Schedule 2 to this Order;
(c)£11,000 where a dwelling is in one of the areas specified in Schedule 3 to this Order;
(d)£10,000 where a dwelling is in one of the areas specified in Schedule 4 to this Order; and
(e)£9,000 where a dwelling is in one of the areas specified in Schedule 5 to this Order.

Explanatory Note
(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order specifies the amount of discount for the purposes of section 17 of the Housing Act 1996 (the right to acquire). Tenants of registered social landlords who have a right to acquire their homes under sections 16 and 17 of the 1996 Act will be able to do so with a discount from the purchase price. The amount of the discount will vary according to the area in which the dwelling is situated.
