The Seed Potatoes (Amendment) Regulations 1997

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Secretary of State, being Ministers designated(1) for the purposes of section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972(2) in relation to the common agricultural policy of the European Community, acting jointly, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by that section and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf hereby make the following Regulations:
Citation and commencement
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Seed Potatoes (Amendment) Regulations 1997 and shall come into force on 1st July 1997.
Amendment of the Seed Potatoes Regulations 1991
2. For paragraph 3 of Schedule 4 to the Seed Potatoes Regulations 1991(3) there shall be substituted the following paragraph:–
“3.—(1) An official label shall measure not less than 110mm x 67mm and, subject to sub-paragraph (2) below, shall have printed on it the words–
“EC Rules and Standards”.
(2) Official labels printed prior to 1st July 1997 with the abbreviation “EEC” instead of “EC” may be used until 31 December 2001.”.

Explanatory Note
(This note is not part of the Regulations)
These Regulations further amend the Seed Potatoes Regulations 1991. They implement Council Directive 96/72/EC amending Directives 66/400/EEC, 66/401/EEC, 66/402/EEC, 66/403/EEC, 69/208/EEC and 70/458/EEC on the marketing of beet seed, fodder plant seed, cereal seed, seed potatoes, seed of oil and fibre plants and vegetable seed (O.J. 1996 No.L304, 27.11.96, p.10).
They provide for the substitution of the letters “EC” for the letters “EEC” on official labels for seed potatoes but provide for remaining stocks of labels bearing the abbreviation “EEC” to continue to be used until 31st December 2001.
