ROAD TRAFFIC (SURRENDER OF NUMBER PLATES) ORDER, 1996

(SECTION 27)

[Commencement 22nd March, 1996]

1. (1) This Order may be cited as the Road Traffic (Surrender of Number Plates) Order, 1996.

(2) This Order shall come into effect on the 22nd day of March, 1996.

12. Number plates of— (a) passenger vehicles being private motor vehicles

to which regulation 6(2)(a) of the Motor Vehicle and Speed Limit Regulations applies;

(b) motor-trucks; (c) motor-cycles; (d) public service vehicles; (e) motor vehicles imported under bond excepting

vehicles imported by tourists for periods not exceeding six months; and

(f) motor vehicles, other than vehicles coming under subparagraphs (a) to (e), which bear a registered number preceded by the letter “M”,

shall be surrendered to the Controller for replacement between 22nd March, 1996 and 31st October, 1997.

3. (1) Number plates surrendered pursuant to para- graph 2 shall, subject to paragraph 4, be replaced by plates bearing —

(a) in the case of the vehicles referred to in subparagraphs (a), (b) and (c) of paragraph 2, yellow numbers and letters on a royal blue background with the name of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon;

(b) in the case of a public service vehicle that is used as a taxi-cab, black numbers and letters on a yellow background with the name of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon;

1 Paragraph 3 of S.I. 7 of 1999 provides as follows:

“Number plates of motor vehicles which bear white letters and numbers on an orange background with the names of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon shall be surrendered to the Controller for replacement between the 25th January, 1999 and the 31st March, 1999.”.

(c) in the case of a public service vehicle that is used as a livery vehicle, yellow numbers and letters on a black background with the name of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon;

(d) in the case of a public service vehicle that is used as an omnibus operating on a public scheduled service, yellow numbers and letters on a green background with the name of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon;

(e) in the case of a public service vehicle that is used as an omnibus operating on a private scheduled service, white numbers and letters on a green background with the name of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon;

(f) in the case of a public service vehicle that is used as an omnibus operating privately chartered services, black numbers and letters on a green background with the name of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon;

(g) in the case of a public service vehicle that is used as a self-drive vehicle, green numbers and letters on a white background with the registered number being preceded by the letters “S.D.” and with the name of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon;

(h) in the case of a public service vehicle that is used as a tour car, red numbers and letters on a white background with the registered number being preceded by the letters “T.C.” and with the name of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon;

(i) in the case of a bonded vehicle referred to in subparagraph (e) of paragraph (2), black numbers and letters on an orange background with the words “Bonded Vehicle” embossed thereon;

(j) in the case of a motor vehicle referred to in subparagraph (f) of paragraph 2, black numbers and letters on a white background with the registered number being preceded by the letter “M” and the name of one of the islands of The Bahamas embossed thereon.

(2) The Controller shall issue decals having thereon a month of the year in an abbreviated form, along with a number representing the current licensing year, in white letters and numbers on a coloured background to be attached to the rear number plate and to the front windscreen of a vehicle described in paragraph 2.

4. (1) The fee for a set of number plates issued in replacement of plates surrendered under paragraph 2 shall be fifteen dollars.

(2) The fee for a set of decals issued under subparagraph (2) of paragraph 3 shall be ten dollars for the current licensing year.

ROAD TRAFFIC (VEHICLE INSPECTION) REGULATIONS

(SECTION 32(5)) [Commencement 24th October, 1959]

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Vehicle Inspection) Regulations.

2. In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires

“Act” means the Road Traffic Act; “Controller” means the Controller of Road Traffic

appointed under the Act; “certificate of inspection” means the certificate issued

by the Inspector to the owner certifying that at the time of inspection the motor vehicle in- spected was determined to be safe, and setting out the date of the expiration of certificate of inspection and any other information as may be deemed necessary by the Controller of Road Traffic;

“certificate of fitness” means the certificate endorsed on the application for registration of a motor vehicle certifying that at the time of inspection by the Inspector the motor vehicle was determined to be safe;
