BERMUDA LIBRARY REDESIGNATION ACT 1996

WHEREAS it is expedient to redesignate the Bermuda Library as
the national library of Bermuda:

Be it enacted by The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty, by and
with the advice and consent of the Senate and the House of Assembly of
Bermuda, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

Short title
1 This Act may be cited as the Bermuda Library Redesignation Act
1996.

Redesignation of the Bermuda Library
2 (1) With effect from the date of commencement of this Act, the
Bermuda Library is established as the national library of Bermuda and is
accordingly redesignated as the Bermuda National Library for all
purposes.

(2) The expression "the Bermuda Library" in subsection (1) has
the meaning that was assigned to it by section 1 of the Bermuda Library
Act 1946 ("the 1946 Act") immediately before the above date.

Consequential amendment of certain enactments
3 Consequentially upon section 2—

(a) the 1946 Act is re-titled "the Bermuda National Library
Act 1946";

(b) subject to the first item in the Schedule to this Act,
wherever in the 1946 Act or in any regulations under
that Act the phrase "Bermuda Library" appears, the
phrase "Bermuda National Library" is substituted;

(c) the enactments specified in column 1 of the Schedule to
this Act are amended in the manner respectively
specified in column 2 of that Schedule.

Commencement
4 This Act comes into operation on such day as the Minister
responsible for Archives may appoint by notice published in the Gazette.

SCHEDULE (Section 3(b), (c))

Section 1 of the 1946 Act: Delete the definition of "the
Bermuda Library" and substitute
the following—

""the Bermuda National Library"
means the library established
and maintained in Bermuda
since the year 1839 under the
name "the Bermuda Library",
and any extension or branch
of that library subsequently
established and being
maintained;"

Paragraph (b) of the proviso to
section (7)(2) of the Post Office Act
1900:

Insert "National" immediately
before "Library"

Part B of the First Schedule to the
Government Authorities (Fees) Act
1971:

Delete "Bermuda Library
Committee" and substitute
"Bermuda National Library
Committee"
