BERMUDA GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS AMENDMENT ACT
1996

[Operative Date 22 March 1996]

WHEREAS it is expedient to amend the Bermuda Government
Scholarships Act 1958:

Be it enacted by The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty, by and
with the advice and consent of the Senate and the House of Assembly of
Bermuda, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

Short title
1 This Act which amends the Bermuda Government Scholarships
Act 1958 (hereinafter referred to as "the principal Act") may be cited as
the Bermuda Government Scholarships Amendment Act 1996.

Amends principal Act
2 The principal Act is amended by inserting next after section 1
the following section—

"Interpretation
1A In this Act "the Minister" means the Minister responsible
for Education and related matters.".

Amends section 3 of principal Act
3 Section 3 of the principal Act is amended by deleting the symbol
and figure "$10,000" and substituting the symbol and figure "$12,500".

Repeals and replaces section 4 of principal Act
4 Section 4 of the principal Act is repealed and replaced by the
following—

"Minister may increase value and extend term of scholarship
4 The Minister may, in such circumstances as he considers
appropriate—

(i) increase the annual value of any two of
the Bermuda Government Scholarships
to a sum not exceeding $15,000; and

(ii) extend the term during which a
Bermuda Government Scholarship is
tenable for a further year to enable the
holder thereof to undertake or complete
a course of study which has been
approved by the Minister.".

Amends section 5 of principal Act
5 Section 5 of the principal Act is amended in subsection (1)—

(a) by deleting the words "responsible for education and
related matters"; and

(b) by deleting paragraph (d).

Amends section 6 of principal Act
6 Section 6 of the principal Act is amended in paragraph (a) by
deleting the words "twenty-first" and substituting the words "twenty-
third".

Amends section 7 of principal Act
7 Section 7 of the principal Act is amended by deleting the symbol
and figure "$10,000" and substituting the symbol and figure "$12,500".

Minor consequential amendments
8 The principal Act is amended in sections 2, 3, 7 and 8 by
deleting the word "Governor" wherever it appears and substituting
therefore in each case the word "Minister".
