Chapter 1 General provisions

Art. 1 Purpose

This Order governs:

A.
Continuing university education at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (EPF Zurich);
B.
Skills in this area.
Art. 2 Definition and purpose of continuing education

1 Continuing university education is the continuation or resumption of formal training at the end of a university training cycle, usually at the master level (initial training). It is research-oriented and runs parallel or consecutively to the professional activity carried out at the end of the initial training.

2 The continuous training offerings of the ETH Zurich aim at a high level:

A.
Specialization and deepening in the specific field of initial training;
B.
The development of initial training in another field; or
C.
Complement and interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary expansion of initial training.

3 Continuous training may exceptionally follow the initial training immediately:

A.
Where there is a lack of corresponding offers in the initial training courses;
B.
To encourage targeted entry into professional life at the end of initial training.

4 Further training is also used to encourage succession among graduates of the ETH Zurich and to facilitate vocational rehabilitation.

Art. 3 Continuing Education

Ongoing training at the ETH Zurich includes:

A.
Continuing education programs;
B.
Development courses;
C.
Custom courses for businesses and organizations (Customized Programs);
D.
The use of digital learning resources or platforms (e-learning offers).
Art. 4 Skills and Organization

1 School management approves regulations and budgets for continuing education programs.

2 The rector decides on the admission of candidates to master programmes on the proposal of the programme directorates.

3 Each continuing education program is under the responsibility of a program branch. It is responsible for:

A.
Screening of candidates for the master program;
B.
The selection of candidates for the Diploma of Advanced Studies or the Certificate of Advanced Studies;
C.
Delivery of the program;
D.
Resource management;
E.
Quality assurance;
F.
Submission of reports.

4 The other continuing training offers are placed under the responsibility of the departments, institutes and professors of the ETH Zurich who organise them.

5 The ETH Zurich continues to coordinate and support all the continuing training offerings of the ETH Zurich. It is under the authority of the Rector.

Chapter 2 Continuing Education Programs

Section 1 Purpose and Definition

Art. 5

1 Continuous training programs are usually directed to highly qualified specialists, as well as to senior scientific and technical executives and executives of private or public companies or the administration that are Holders of a high school master's degree.

2 They serve to deepen the specialised knowledge of the participants, to develop them or to broaden them in an interdisciplinary perspective, as well as to encourage the succession among graduates and collaborators of the EFA of Zurich and the Facilitate professional reintegration.

3 The distinction between:

A.
Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) and (Executive) Master of Business Administration (EMBA or MBA);
B.
Diplomas of Advanced Studies (DAS) and Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS).

4 Continuing education programs are structured according to study plans. The latter are adapted to the objectives of the programme and take into account as far as possible the interests of the participants.

Section 2 Masters courses in university continuing education

Art. 6 Definition, purpose and volume

1 Masters courses in university-based continuing education are long-term, structured, post-tertiary training offers aimed at high school graduates with a view to furthering their specialized knowledge, Develop or expand them in an interdisciplinary perspective.

2 They include:

A.
The Master of Advanced Studies MAS;
B.
The Master of Business Administration (EMBA or MBA).

3 They must meet the following conditions:

A.
They generally last one year as full-time or two-year studies as part time studies in the course of employment;
B.
Include at least 60 ECTS credits;
C.
They usually consist of at least 600 hours of contact in the form of lectures, work, seminars or other forms of organised education;
D.
Require the writing of a master's or project work over several months.

4 Details are addressed in the Program Study Regulations.

Art. 7 Degree and academic title

1 The EPF in Zurich awarded the Master's Degree of Continuing Education to the participants who successfully completed a master's degree program of continuing university education. The master's degree describes the purpose of the program and the academic title awarded. It is signed by the Rector and the Head of the Department.

2 Depending on the type of programme, the title awarded is either "Master of Advanced Studies ETH in ... (Discipline)" or "(Executive) Master of Business Administration ETH in ... (Discipline)". A possible specialization will be mentioned after the discipline: "Specialization in ... (specialization)".

3 The title gives the right to use:

A.
Abbreviations "MAS ETH ... (abbreviation of the discipline/abbreviation of specialization)" or "(E) MBA ETH ... (abbreviation of the discipline/abbreviation of specialization)";
B.
The generic term "MAS ETH" or "(E) MBA ETH".

4 Other titles may be awarded for special programmes or in case of cooperation with another high school. In the case of master programs offered in cooperation with another high school, the title is awarded on behalf of the ETH Zurich and the other high school concerned.

5 The master title shall be protected in accordance with Art. 38, para. 1, let. B and c of the Federal Act of 4 October 1991 on FIEs 1 .


Art. 8 Diploma Supplement and Overview of Prior Learning

1 The Master's degree is accompanied by the Diploma Supplement, which describes the level, context, content and status of successful studies.

2 If the checks on the acquis have been noted, a certificate may also be issued.

3 Anyone who is excluded from the master's programme or interrupts before obtaining the master's degree may require the programme management to provide an overview of its achievements. It indicates the learning outcomes provided and evaluated and ECTS credits obtained up to the exclusion or interruption.

Art. Admission, registration and registration

1 Can be admitted to a master's degree program of continuing university education any person who holds a master's degree from an EPF or a diploma from another high school recognized as equivalent. The admission is based on the candidate's personal file.

2 Highly qualified candidates who do not meet the conditions set out in para. 1 may exceptionally be admitted if they justify professional experience and corresponding additional qualifications in the areas of specialization required.

3 The number of participants in a master's programme may be limited according to the capacity for coaching and training facilities. In this case, the selection of participants is based on additional criteria such as professional experience, prior knowledge and specific qualifications. For interdisciplinary master's programs, the desired panachage of participants is also crucial.

4 No one may assert a right to admission to a master's program.

5 Participants in a master program are registered as students of the ETH Zurich during their training.

6 The Centre for Training continues to apply registration and registration formalities.

Art. 10 Recognition of Previously Acquired Credits

1 ECTS credits acquired in previous training may be taken into account:

A.
They have been acquired at the ETH Zurich or in a training institution recognised as equivalent by the Zurich EPF;
B.
If their acquisition is not more than five years old; and
C.
If the content and results of the learning are considered equivalent by the program management.

2 The appropriations taken into account may not exceed 20 % of the total programme appropriations, unless it is a modular programme, each module of which can be tracked separately as an autonomous education.

3 Strict conditions may be defined in the program study regulations.

Section 3 Diploma of Advanced Studies and Certificate of Advanced Studies

Art. 11 Definition, purpose and volume

1 The Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) and the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) are short-term structured post-tertiary training offers that are offered in the course of employment and are aimed at high school graduates in the Aim to deepen their expertise, to develop them or to broaden them in an interdisciplinary perspective.

2 DAS programs must meet the following conditions:

Include at least 30 ECTS credits;
B.
They usually consist of at least 300 hours of contact in the form of lectures, work, seminars or other forms of organised education;

3 The CAS programs must meet the following conditions:

A.
Include at least 10 ECTS credits;
B.
They usually consist of at least 150 hours of contact in the form of lectures, work, seminars or other forms of organised education;
C.
They may require the writing of a project or diploma.

4 Details are addressed in the Program Study Regulations.

Art. 12 Continuing Education Diploma, Continuing Education Certificate

1 The EPF in Zurich offers a continuing education diploma or a certificate of continuous training to participants who have successfully completed a DAS or CAS programme. The diploma indicates the purpose and volume of the program. It is signed by the Head of the Department and by the Program Delegate.

2 The diploma or certificate is worded as follows: "Diploma of Advanced Studies EPF en ... (Discipline)" or "Certificate of Advanced Studies EPF in ... (Discipline)".

3 In the case of a proposed DAS or CAS programme in cooperation with another high school, the diploma or certificate shall be issued on behalf of the competent department of the ETH Zurich and the unit responsible for the other high school concerned.

4 The diploma or certificate of continuing education is accompanied by the Diploma Supplement, which describes the level, context, content and status of the studies carried out successfully.

5 If the checks on the acquis have been noted, a certificate may also be issued.

6 Anyone who is excluded from the DAS or CAS programme or interrupts before obtaining the diploma or certificate may require the programme management to provide an overview of its achievements. It indicates the learning outcomes provided and evaluated and ECTS credits obtained up to the exclusion or interruption.

Art. 13 Admission, Registration and Registration

1 Can be admitted to a DAS or CAS program any person who holds a master's degree from a FIF or a diploma from another high school recognized as equivalent. The admission is based on the candidate's personal file.

2 Highly qualified candidates who do not meet the conditions set out in para. 1 may exceptionally be admitted if they justify professional experience and corresponding additional qualifications in the areas of specialization required.

3 The number of participants in a DAS or CAS program may be limited in terms of the coaching capacity and the training facilities. In this case, the selection of participants is based on additional criteria such as professional experience, prior knowledge and specific qualifications.

4 No person shall have the right to admission to a DAS or CAS programme.

5 Registration shall be made with the secretariat of the programme concerned.

6 The Centre for Continuing Education registers participants in the DAS and CAS programmes to the extent that the programme in question requires it. However, the participants in these programmes are not registered as students of the EPF in Zurich.

Art. 14 Recognition of Previously Acquired Credits

Art. 10 applies to the recognition of ECTS credits previously acquired.

Chapter 3 Development Courses

Art. 15 Definition and Purpose

1 Development courses (including seminars and conferences) are used to update knowledge and to develop, deepen, transfer and exchange skills in the various fields of specialization of the ETH Zurich.

2 They usually last one to ten days and are aimed at qualified specialists from practice.

3 They aim to transfer current knowledge from university research and application-oriented knowledge.

Art. 16 Certification

Participants in a developmental course may receive a certificate of participation.

Art. 17 Admission

1 May be admitted to developmental courses:

A.
Persons with a high school diploma;
B.
Members of the ETH Zurich;
C.
Qualified specialists who do not hold a high school diploma, but with additional qualifications and professional experience.

2 The administrators of the developmental courses decide on admission.

Chapter 4 Customized Programs

Art. 18 Definition and Purpose

1 The departments, institutes and Chairs of the ETH Zurich organize tailor-made courses for enterprises, organizations and administrations.

2 These courses are given at the ETH Zurich or in the institution concerned.

3 They are subject to the same quality standards as the other continuous training offers from the ETH Zurich.

Art. 19 Certification

Participants in a customized course can receive a certificate of participation.

Art. Admission

Those responsible for the organisation of tailor-made courses, in agreement with the institution concerned, also admit to the courses, in addition to persons holding a high school diploma, qualified specialists and members of the ETH Zurich.

Chapter 5 Digital Learning Resources or Platforms

Art.

1 Digital learning resources and platforms (e-learning offerings) Are offers of continuing, autonomous or integrated training or training to other offers of this type, which are generally used on the Internet and outside the school for continuing education.

2 Resource providers and digital learning platforms decide on terms and conditions of use.

Chapter 6 Taxes

Art.

The fees for registration, participation and withdrawal of registration are governed by the Ordinance of 31 May 1995 on taxes in the field of FIF 1 .


Chapter 7 Final provisions

Art. Transitional provisions

1 The regulations and fees for continuing training programmes shall be adapted to this order by 31 December 2013 at the latest.

2 Continuous training programmes, professional development courses and other offers already announced or in progress at the time of entry into force of this order shall be subject to the provisions of the order of 14 September 1988 on the Post-training 1 No later than the end of the program or course in question.
