Proposal for Resolution No 25 /XII
Convention No 183 on the Revision of the Convention (Revista) on the Protection of the
Motherhood, 1952, was adopted by the General Conference of the International Organization of the
Work, at its 88 th Session, held in Geneva, on June 15, 2000.
Convention No 183 on the Revision of the Convention (Revista) on the Protection of the
Maternity, 1952, proceeds to the revision of the Convention No 103 on the Protection of the
Motherhood (Revista in 1952), adopted by the International Labour Conference, in the
its 35 th Session, held in Geneva, on June 28, 1952, approved, for ratification,
by the Decree of Government No 63/84, published in 1ª series of the Journal of the Republic n. 235, of
October 10, 1984.
Being the protection of motherhood an important strand of the social policy of the Republic
Portuguese, the Convention that it is intended to approve comes to strengthen the protection of the
motherhood, broadening its field of application, both with respect to people
covered, as for guaranteed protection, specifically in the matter of licence of
maternity, social protection, protection in employment and non-discrimination.
The Portuguese legal order gives already compliance with all the principles of the Convention
n. 183 on the Review of the Convention (Revista) on the Protection of Maternity, 1952.
Thus:
Under the terms of the paragraph d) of Article 197 (1) of the Constitution, the Government presents to the
Assembly of the Republic the following motion for a resolution:
CHAIR OF THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS
Enact the Convention on the Review of the Convention (Revista) on the Protection of the
Maternity, 1952, adopted by the General Conference of the International Organization of the
Work at its 88 th Session, held in Geneva on June 15, 2000, the text of which
authenticated version in the English language, as well as the respective translation for language
Portuguese, if published in annex.
