CHAIR OF THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS

Proposal for Resolution No. 139 /X

Recognizing that it is in the interest of all humanity that Antarctica continues to be

used exclusively for peaceful purposes and which does not become the stage or object of

international discord;

Recognizing the important contributions to the scientific knowledge resulting from the

international cooperation on scientific research in Antarctica;

Meeting the importance of the Antarctic Treaty in the establishment of a solid foundation

for the continuation and development of international cooperation, founded on freedom

of scientific research as practiced during the International Geophysical Year;

Thus:

Under the terms of the paragraph d) of Article 197 (1) of the Constitution, the Government presents to the

Assembly of the Republic the following motion for a resolution:

Approve, for accession, the Treaty for Antarctica, adopted in Washington in 1 of

December 1959, the text of which, in the authenticated version in the English language, as well as the

respective translation for Portuguese language, if published in annex.
