PRESIDENCY of the COUNCIL of MINISTERS resolution No. 139/X recognizing that it is in the interest of all mankind that Antarctica continues to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and that it does not become stage or object of international discord; Recognizing the important contributions to scientific knowledge resulting from international cooperation in the field of scientific research in Antarctica; Given the importance of the Antarctic Treaty in establishing a sound basis for the continuation and development of international cooperation, founded on freedom of scientific research as practiced during the International Geophysical Year (IgY); So: under d) of paragraph 1 of article 197 of the Constitution, the Government presents to the Assembly of the Republic the following resolution: to approve, for accession, the Treaty for Antarctica, adopted in Washington on 1 December 1959, the text of which, in the authenticated version in the English language, as well as their translation into Portuguese language, published in annex.
