ELEVATION OF THE VILLAGE OF SAMORA CORREIA THE CITY

Justification note

1. Historical record and current characterization

The Village of Samora Correia, founded on a date close to the beginning of the

nationality, has been seat of concelho since the fourteenth century and has seen confirmed to

category of Vila, by foral granted by D. Manuel I, on April 13 de

1510.

In 1836, the administrative and territorial reform of Passos Manuel,

reordered the country and extinguished, among others, the concelain of Samora Correia.

Since that date, the village of Samora Correia has become the seat of the

largest freesthesia of the Benavente concelho.

It has an area of 322.4 km2 and a population that was elevated, in

2001, to 12,826 inhabitants, about 55% of the population of the Concelho, being the

freguesia with highest demographic growth of the District.

2. Localization

The Village of Samora Correia is situated 35km from Lisbon and 10km from Vila

Franca of Xira.

The freguesia confronts the nascent with the patrons of Santo

Estêvain (Benavente's concelho) and Canha (Montijo's county), the North

with the Benavente freguesia, the Poente with the concelain of Vila Franca de

Xira and Rio Tejo and the South with the Councelhos of Alcochete and Freguesia of the

Pocewill (Palmela's concelain).

3. Population

The population of the Freguesia of Samora Correia has been growing in shape

accentuated since 1960, at an average annual pace of 3.64%, having passed from

3,703 inhabitants at that time to 12,826 in 2001. It is estimated that,

currently, be more than 15,800 the number of inhabitants, of which

23.5% is less than 20 years old.

It is estimated that the village of Samora Correia has, today, more than 12,000

inhabitants, in continuous population agglomerate.

4. Electors

The freguesia of Samora Correia had on December 13, 2007,

11,102 voters representing average annual growth, since 1978, of

5.3%.

5. Acessibilities

The construction of the bridge over the Tejo River in Vila Franca de Xira, in

1951, which follows the construction of E. N. 10 that establishes the link between the

North, the South of the country and Spain and the improvement of E. N. 118, which connects the Peninsula

from Setúbal to the centre of the country, conferred on Samora Correia uma

centrality that constituted in the main driver factor of the

changes verified in recent decades.

More recently, the construction of the Vasco da Gama bridge, with the

southern end, close to the limit of the freguesia, the construction of the A13, which

league Santarém at A2 and from A10 connecting A9 and A1 to A13-infrastructures

road routes that pass in the interior of the freguesia-accentuate centrality

acquired in the second half of the last century.

This privileged location of Samora Correia, associated with the

development of road transport, the flat characteristics of the

soils, the increase in the price of construction in Greater Lisbon and capacity

site of building and improving basic infrastructures, conferred a

high attractiveness. This contributed, decisively, to the

development of the freguesia in the plan of economic activities, with

6. Economic, social and cultural development

6.1. The relevance in the regional context

Samora Correia has today more than 150 small, medium and

large industrial units.

Alongside industrial growth, it is also verifies that the

growth of trade, catering and services with more than 800

units.

Despite the growing industrial, commercial and business activity

services, there is a set of small, medium and large

agri-livestock holdings, of which, stands out to the Company of the

Lezusions with an extension of 31 thousand ha, distributed by the cultures

of greenhouse, seer, regadio, pastoricia and a vast area of mounted,

pinhal and eucalyptal.

From support to intense economic activity, Samora Correia

it has, at the headquarters of the freguesia, eight bank branches.

Its natural conditions, from flat soils, to its geo-position

strategic in relation to the set of existing acessibilities, the

moves to the installation of new public services

administrative, the construction of the future airport of Lisbon, in the

6.2. Collective Equipment

6.2.1. Public, Private and Pharmacy Health Units

The Village of Samora Correia has, in its urban core,

1,657 users who are not served by this health unit

for lack of a family doctor.

It also has two laboratories of analyses, two

physiotherapy clinics, five medical clinics with diverse

specialties, five dental offices and two pharmacies.

6.2.2 Units of protection, relief and security

The Village of Samora Correia, has for protection,

help and safety of a Volunteer Fire Department

with 95 volunteers, 22 of whom, simultaneously,

professionals, properly trained and equipped, in the frame of the

National Civil Protection Authority.

In the area of security also has an infra

structure that alberates the National Guard's Territorial Rank

Republican, with a forecasted staff frame of 40

military, although, they are only filled 22 seats.

6.2.3. Social equipment

The Village of Samora Correia, in the area of social support, provides,

of the Centre for Social Welfare Padre Tobias, with the status of

IPSS, with diverse valences targeted for the elderly.

There is still a daycare with 92 children and garden of

childhood with 125 children.

It also has four Ateliers of Leisure Time,

one of which, too, with the status of IPSS.

6.2.4. Associations and cultural, recreational and cultural spaces

sports

The cultural, recreational and sporting development in the Villa

of Samora Correia rests largely on the seventeen

Associations that exist, supported by the Local Authorities, being

its activity directed at its associates and the population in

general.

Their daily activity is of relevant importance in the

formation of the population, in the fields of art, culture, the

recreation, sport, relief and social action.

For the purpose, there are in the freguesia a set of infra-

structures of the Associations and Municipalities, with quality and

appreciable quantity, which respond to the needs of the

various activities and of which they excelled, namely, the

public spaces such as the Cultural Centre, with cinema, theatre and

exhibition gallery, the municipal swimming pool covered and heated, the

two gimnosport pavilions, the two tennis courts, the three

lawn fields, the four sports polyvalents, the seven

children's parks and the diverse cultural and recreational spaces of the

Associations.

6.2.5. Museum, museological core and library

The Village of Samora Correia has the Museum of the Society

Philharmonic Union Samorese and the Justino Museological Core

John where you find your estate. It still has the Palace of the

Infantry, where is installed the Odete municipal library and

Carlos Gaspar, ludoteca, public space of the Internet, core

Professor João Fernandes Pratas, auditorium and two galleries of

exhibitions.

6.2.6. Hotel facilities

In addition to the various restoration units,

pastries, bars, cafes and breweries, the Villa of Samora Correia,

has, on the periphery of the urban core, the Residential Homes.

Lourenço with 48 bedrooms, Amalui with 18 bedrooms and Paris with 7

rooms. It is approved and planned the construction of the Hotel Belo

Almansôr with 44 bedrooms.

6.2.7. School equipment

The village of Samora Correia, has, in its urban core, the

School EB 2.3, Professor João Fernandes Pratas with 28 turms and

675 students, EB 1 School of the Source of the Shields with 10 classes

and 226 students, the EB 1 School of Acacias with 16 classes and 356

students, the Childhood Garden, Professor António José Ganhão with

6 classes and 150 students and the Lezlang Childhood Garden with two

classes and 50 students.

Samora Correia counts already with the Secondary Public Education.

6.2.8. Public, urban and suburban transport

The village of Samora Correia, is served by the company

'Ribatejana' for transport of passengers, with transport

urban and suburban regulars and by the companies TeleTaxis with

four viatures, Radio-Taxis with two viactures and Comlevel-

Personalized Transport, with five viatures.

6.2.9. Parks and Public Gardens

The Village of Samora Correia, has an extended set

of parks, gardens and public green areas, among which, the

Rui Luís Gomes Park, the Ribeirinho Park of the Almansôr, the Park

of the Neighborhood of the Esteveira, the Park and Green Zones of the Neighborhood Our

Madam de Oliveira, the Park of the Urbanization of Lezria, the Park

of the Urbanization of the Arneiro of the Pillars, the Garden of Praceta Carlos

Gaspar, the Garden of Alameda Almeida Garrett and the Garden of the

Largo João Fernandes Pratas.

6.3 Cultural Heritage

Samora Correia has an edified heritage that by its

antiquity and architectural value matter to consider, inter alia

some buildings of the eighteenth century, of which the Palace excelled

of the Infantado, with the classified facade of interest concelhio, the

Church of Our Lady of the Oliveira, immovable classified of interest

public and the building of the former City Hall, where it is today

installed the Museum of the Philharmonic Union Samorese Union and the

Museological Core Justino João, enveloping the Republic Square

6.4. Broadcaster and Portal "Samora On-line"

The Village of Samora Correia has a Radio station, from

regional expression that issues, permanently, to the Great

Lisbon, Ribatejo and West, on the frequency of 9th FM, under the designation

of Iris FM.

It still has the "Samora Online" Portal that contributes to

spreading the information, concerning Samora Correia, for the whole world

on www.samoraonline.com.

In these terms, the underwriter, understands that the Villa of

Samora Correia brings together the requirements set out in Article 13º, conjured with

the Article 14º of Law No. 11/82 of June 2, for the village of Samora

Correia is eleved to the category of city.
