ELEVATION OF TAVAREDE, IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF THE FOZ FIG TREE, TO THE CATEGORY OF VILLAGE
Exhibition of reasons
1. The origins and historical evolution
The origin of the word Tavarede continues even today to not have a completely enlightening explanation.
It can derive from the Latin-origin word "Tabes" that means moistdecer, rot, decompose. Tavarede is situated on lands that have been swampy, humid and sickened. We must not forget that the suffix "Etum", in addition to signify set of vines, also meant set of mosquitoes or flies. Will it have been "Tabes" (pantanous land) more "Etum" (set of mosquitoes) the origin of the name of Tavarede?
It is also possible that the toponym "Tavaredvi" of the eleventh century is a locative that relativises itself with Tavarian "formerly Tavarian" that it has derived.
What is known is that the settlement is of antiquated origin, having been depopulated by the action of the Muslims who, it is assumed, in addition to having given rise to depopulation, by the escape of the populations, will have destroyed the same, including the already existing church from S. Martin of Tavarede.
This brief historical resench seems to us important for this work, for, the first time that, in documents to date found, appears the name of Tavarede, it is in a donation in which in 1092, D. Elvira, daughter of the Count Sisnando, and her husband, the then governor of Coimbra, make "de loco sancti Martini in villa Tavaredi" to the procer D. João Gosendis, opulent lord who was especially heralded in the Alta Beira (present concelho of S. Pedro do Sul), but which was one of the magnates of the court of the Count Sisnando.
Later, in 1191 of the age of Christ, new donation is made. This time, it was the second King of Portugal, D. Sancho I and his wife, Queen D. Dulce, who had coured and donated to the church of Santa Maria de Coimbra the "villa that is called Tavarede and is situated on the edge of the sea".

It was shortly after that, with the institution of the Tavarede house, began the struggles for the possession of privileges over the couture of Tavarede that the church of Coimbra, as a donatary, wanted to maintain, and that the trustees, by their power, considered themselves exempt.
It was D. Manuel I, by grace of God king of Portugal and of the Algarves, etc., who, in the year 1516, gave Foral to Tavarede. By that time it was founded by António Fernandes de Quadros the "House of Tavarede", which would be titled by the Quadros family up to the third count of Tavarede, extinguishing the title with the passing of the latter in 1903. In the séc. XVIII there were here three ermids of the lord of the Areeiro, of the lord of the Chã and of Santo Aleixo (this, of the University), all well endowed with rents, by donations, but of which there were only ruins at the ends of the séc. past, as well as of the monjas Franciscanas de Santo António, of Our Lady of Hope, founded in 1527, with protection of D. John III.
The Tavarede's concelain ended in 1834, extinct by Liberalism. Already since the pombalino decree of March 12, 1771, which had created the Comarch of the Figueira da Foz, it belonged to this one, contrary to the ancient privilege of the couture.

2. Sale of Tavarede
It is said that at the siege of the Castle of Montemor-the-Old by the Muslims, the
who had been taken, in the year 848, by the king of Lion, Ramiro I, and after this having
handed over the government of the castle to the Abbot D. João de Montemor (famous abbot of the Monastery
of the Lorvain, who got celebrated for their victories over the moirs), when already the besiegers
judged that the castle would surrender, briefly, by the famine, lo and behold that the aforementioned abbot came out
of the castle with the people of which it disused and, waging battle, managed to win and reel the
Muslims, chasing them up to Seiça.
One of the moiros bosses, who held the power of enchantment, fearful that his eight
daughters fall in power of Christians, cast upon them a spell: " for a thousand years will be
trapped in this grotto of Santa Olaia, while not to arise someone capable of breaking the charm ".
To one of them, Katija, said that their enchantment would be broken when a Christian if
approached her and told her for three times: "sois beautiful like the sun" ...
But the enchantment also envisaged: " The land to where to take you the one who comes
disenchanting you, will be an aprazible, opulent land of nature-rich, plant-rich galas
aromatics, among which one, of rustic and pleasant smell, persistent and soft, will give you the
name and will achieve fame " ...
After the outlet of Coimbra by the Count D. Sesnando, this one sent to Tavarede, as already
has previously referred to, Cidel Pais, with a view to rebuilding and repopuling the village.
Several riders accompanied this MoçArab to help him in those tasks. One of them,
by going through Santa Olaia, he saw, with admiration, eight moiras enchanted together with a grotto and
who fled when they saw him approach.

One of them, Katija, got a little behind the sisters. Reaching out to her, the rider, who stayed
ecstatic for its beauty, did not confine itself and told it: "sois beautiful like the sun" ... Without giving by
that, repeated the phrase several times. The enchantment unfeeted!
Katija, grateful for the break of the charm that had lasted two centuries, asked the rider
to where it took her, to what this one replied that would go to Tavarede. No more, the moira followed
your liberator, remembering the words of your father: aprazible land, rich of plants
aromatics, of rustic smell and pleasant, persistent and smooth ...
3. Traditions
-Tavarede is considered unanimously the Regional Capital of the Amador Theatre, reassembling
to 1860 the first records in the press of the time relating to the representations taken to
effect by local troupes on the most affluent houses of the Povoation. Later between the
decades of 30 and 40 by virtue of the carolice of José da Silva Ribeiro, João Santos and João Gaspar
of Lemos Amorim lived down times, then as of 1950 with the exclusive authorship of the
texts by Master José Ribeiro and with musica by Professor António Simões and João da Silva
Cascano, passed down to a period when everyone wanted to watch these plays and all
the boys and girls wanted to learn how to do Theatre.
Today there are still three Collectives who are dedicated to the art of talma, though, without
doubt, the maximum exponent continues to be the school of the Tavaredese Instruction Society.
-Commemoration of the day of Tavarede, May 9, date on which was assigned the foral by El-Rei
D. Manuel in the year 1516
-Parties in honour of S. Martin, in Tavarede, at the beginning of the month of November. All the
years, on the November 11, the population of Tavarede solemnly fests the Saint
Martin. The tradition, religiosity and folklore involve the most important and ancient
manifestation of faith of this locality. The celebration is initiated with the Mass, moment in which

inhabitants and visitors who accordion to the party pay homage and thank the saint
patron saint graces granted. Soon thereafter, the procession is carried out, which runs through the
main streets of the Freguesia. The procession is composed of several floors, representing the
places to which people make donations. And, finally, to accompany a few glasses of good
Water-foot and roasted chestnuts, an auction aimed at selling the donated genera, whose revenues
revert in favour of the church and its charitable works.
-Parties in honour of Saint António, in the principio of June, in Carritos. Saint António is the
patron of the existing chapel in place of Carritos by what in June is brought to effect
party in your honor.
-Ranches from May, at 1º May, all over the Freguesia. Popular cariz party with plenty
tradition in our land and which is thus described in the publication "Aspects of the Figueira da Foz"
from 1945:
" Drinking, in the dawn alvor of the 1º May pure, hot and fresh water, from the miracle fountain of the Várzea of Tavarede-is from the tradition that provides health, happiness, joy and luck-for the whole year. Therefore everyone from the lands to the derby of the beautiful and laughter village, wraps and joins in the praxist morning, on the wide where the bica rumorries on a crystalline thread. There is no working lady, who does not consume the ultimate April night, to flower her pot of red clay-which is great the despique in presenting, capriciously adorned, the airosy cantaries. Still the sky is a craven of stars and ill if laiva the nascent of a ténue and soft clarity, already descend from the pinses of the cruise, from the azinhagas of the Robim, from the road of Mira-following the easy and jeitous path of the Várzea de Tavarede-ranching of people lass and gumbling, singing and bailing, between laughter and folgars. " At present, as there is no longer the source of the Várzea, the ranches move to the Figueira where they act in various locations.

4. Geographic, physical and socio-economic characterization
The Freguesia of Tavarede is located in the Center of the Foz's Figueira Concelho, in the
district of Coimbra, from whose headquarters concelhia dists about 3 kms. Got like Freguesias
border crossings Brenha to North; Alhadas and Green Village to Nascent, S. Julion to South and Buarcos and S.
Julion the Poente.
With an area of about 12 kms2, Tavarede is constituted by the following places: Abadias,
Counties, Várzea, Vila Robim, Alto S. João, Quinta da Esperança, Quinta do Paço, Lord of the
Areeiro, Azenles, Pijeciros, Robala's Casal, Saltadouro, Ferrugenta, Broeiras, Matiôa, Chan,
Couple of the Sand, Caceira, Carriages and Vergieira.
" Tavarede is situated at the bottom of the basin in a deep valley, only at four metres
above sea level, in the direction of the poent to the spring to the Cumieira, the saw of the Good
Travel.
Two branches of this saw partem-one from the point of the hamlet of the saw, prolonging-
if by the Counties to the south, until you reach the place of the Lord of the Areeiro at 600 metres to the
potent of Tavarede, where ends the horizon of that settlement by this side;-another,
departing from the same saw and in the direction of Cabanas, extends by the Saltadouro, Prazo,

ramification of the sawing lost at that point. From there, the mound continues for some
distance and divides afterwards into three parts: one that follows to the southwest, and is the one in
which relies on our matrix church; the other, parallel to this, is the base of the Lomba Street; the
third, growing from the pinhal to the sueste, settles on it the Lapa couple, going on to lose
the name with the shipyards.
The basin in which settles Tavarede, framed from the north, nascent and potent, by the mounds
which designei, is open south of the side where passes the Mondego, two kilometres below
of that settlement. It has length, from north to south 2,500 meters, and of width 70,
being crossed longitudinally by a ribeiro who receives the waters of the strands of the
Serra da Boa Viagem and the Saltadouro, and, past to the edge of the nascent side of
Tavarede, sliding down the plain below, goes by the fountain of Várzea to lump on the Mondego.
In the course of the riber's path are set up three azenhas. The basin, is in large part

Since its principles, Tavarede has been a vocationalized land for agriculture, well

Also the orange of Tavarede had fame, in the seventeenth century, it came to be exported to

In the year 1489, the stall of the Sé de Coimbra encourages the economic life of the Couto de
Tavarede and, for the purpose, facilitates the artisanal ceramic industry, allowing Afonso

The careers were one of the professions that most tradition left in Tavarede. Although not
was exclusive to one family, had great fame, and for many dozens of years,
those who became known for the Toquins performed all the functions with the
their joints of oxen, washed the earth and made the transport of all the materials
necessary.

5. Demography
According to the 2001 CENSOS, the Freguesia of Tavarede owned 7,644 residents and 5,985 census electors, numero that increased to 7,470 voters in 2009.

6. Erected Heritage:
Paço de Tavarede
The Paço de Tavarede is the ex-libris of the Freguesia. Warrant edited in the sixteenth century by António
Fernandes de Quadros, 1º Morgado of Tavarede, a fidget of Spanish descent who
has provided distinguished services to the Portuguese crown, notably as Adail of Azamor, to whom
has been confirmed by Letter of Cotta D' Armas the crest that, even today, the old man's frontrunner

Paço ostries. Over the years, the building has been the subject of important changes to its
initial architecture. In the late eighteenth century it was remerged the north facade and during the
nineteenth century the works of restoration, in false Manuelino, altered almost completely their
original moth, from which it stayed only the northern facade, the passage to the inner courtyard, the
main door and a Manuelina window that lies at the guard of the Municipal Museum. Already in the
Séc. XX, the Paço de Tavarede passed from hand to hand until it was acquired by the House
Municipal of the Figueira da Foz in 1981. It was classified as real estate of public interest
by Decree 28/82 of February 26. After a long period of slow agony that led him to
ruin, it has started its reconstruction, which it was only completed in principles of 2006. Ali
work the services of the DASE and Youth and Sport Division of the City Hall of the
Figueira da Foz and since November 17, 2006, also there one finds itself running the " Shop

Source of Tavarede

and the beauty of the locality, in two blocks of the authorship of the poet Cardoso Martha, the Source is
enciled by one other panel, representing the baptism of Jesus Christ. On one of the walls
sides, also in tile, are honored " Those who of death have freed themselves
honoring and dignifying Tavarede " We can read the names of Master José da Silva Ribeiro,
Violinda Medina e Silva, João da Silva Cascano, António Jorge Silva and José Nunes Medina, the
which constitute the Freguesia Honour Frame.
Parochial Church
The present Paroquial Church of S. Martin de Tavarede already existed in the séc. XI, being possible that
it was much earlier (the holy bishop turonense is from the most remote Hispanic devotions) and
had been destroyed by the Moors and depopulated his hoop, as it was his neighbor of S.
Julion of the Foz of the Mondego. The Church of S. Martin must have been from the condo D. Sisnando, for
his death passed to the possession of his daughter D. Elvira. On the other hand, you do not talk about your
foundation, which leads to suppose, for certain, that it was already old, but out of the fury or appropriation
sisnandina, for only so do you explain yourself to have D. Elvira as your "own church", without having it
founded her or the father. In 1565 arrived at Tavarede the painter Diogo Botelho, in order to paint the
replant of the church of S. Martin, and in the year 1600 this church was treated by artists of

Coimbra to safeguard the decay of your capel-mor. In the interior, there is a sink of
benta water dated to the year 1600.
Chapel of Santo Alexios
About 50 meters from the Church situates the Chapel of Santo Aleixo works as Salon
Parochial and Sala for Catequese of Children. On the toponymic plate of the Largo of Santo Aleixo
it can be read that " The primitive ermida local erect by the people was thirst for a brotherhood that
kept a hospital to stir up the Pilgrims and poor, SEC. XVI ".
