BILL OF LAW N. 537/X
ELEVATION OF LAVOS, IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF THE FOZ FIG TREE, TO THE CATEGORY OF VILLAGE
Exhibition of reasons
1. The origins and historical evolution
The toponym Lavos derives from the Latin term "lavanus", of uncertain origin, through the Portuguese
ancient "gravestones", which held up to the sixteenth century.
Lavos is ancient settlement. It was couture, village and seat of concelho. Your couture already appears
mentioned in the testamentary donation made by the Abbot Peter (deceased in 1100), of the church
from S. Julion (Figueira da Foz) to the Sé de Coimbra.
Invaded after sarracens, met several invested, epidemics and consequent
mortanties that contributed to it being short of their settlement. The first
attempt to repopulate the region has deposed to the action of the bishop of Coimbra, João Anaia (1148-
1154), which will have distributed the couture of Lavos and other villas annexed by 7 settlers under
condition of taking talar habits.
Not basing the unsuccessful of this initiative, it turned out to generate some contentment among the Sé
of Coimbra and the Monastery of Santa Cruz, both claimants of the right of possession on these
land. It will be by bula of 1203, that the couture of Lavos passes to the possession and landlord of the Sé de
Coimbra.
In 1217, the then Lavos of the Navy receives foral from D. Afonso II. D. Manuel grant him
foral new in 1519, designating it by Lavans . The primitive township of Port of Washings
2
would, however, be buried by the devastating power of the sands of the oceanic dunes and, between
1628-1632, its church rebuilt in a top quota, in the Tojal. However, new
soterrations compelled to erect new temple on higher ground (1743), choosing the
place of Santa Luzia, where still, incidentally, it remains.
Only at inproceedings from the séc. Nineteenth, with a plan for the arborization of the dunes of Lavos, put an end to the
devastating power of the bustling and dangerous sands. Lavos and Paião formed a
concelho that, in 1853, would be extinguished and attached to that of the Figueira.
2. Route of the Salinas or a mandatory visit to the salt gardens .
The salines are an integral part of the history, culture and landscape of this region.
From the beginnings of nationality to a recent past, the exploitation of salt in the
estuary of the Mondego was one of its main economic activities. The typology of the
salines and the technology of production assume in this concelho certain specificities
that do not occur in other salineous regions of Portugal and Europe, having survived
up to our days an artisanal technique, extremely well taken care of and well suited to the
half, which prints to the salinas of the Morraceira and Armazwarehouses of Lavos, a true character
from Gardens of Sal.
Addressing extremely confined landscapes from the geographical point of view and in
accelerated disappearance, artisanal salines deserve to be conserved, as it
currently are recognized as true cultural legacies to which it is associated
a specific fauna and flora that often comprises species and communities of
great natural value.
By virtue of circumstances several to the secular salt production, around the estuary of the
Mondego, decayed vertiginously from the decades of 60/70, reconverting many
of the abandoned tallions to new and more profitable productions (fish farming). In spite of everything,
3
aware that salt marines remain an important part of the landscape, of the
imaginary and historical identity of the concelho, the municipality acquired in 1999 a Salina do
Hall of the Cobra, sita in Armazwarehouses of Lavos.
The community projects ALLAS (All About Salt-2000-2003) and Sal from the Atlantic (Interreg IIIB
-2005-2007) were fundamental to enable the municipality to develop a multiplicity
of extended actions to the most diverse sectors and interests, within the framework of partnerships and
strategic lines of performance defined by the respective programmes.
Since the studies on biodiversity in the salines of the Mondego estuary, the
cartographic survey in SIG drawn up on the Salgado of Foz's Figueira, to the
process for certification of traditional salt, to encourage participation and creation of encounters
between traditional salt producers, the holding of seminars and academic encounters in
around themed, to the traditional salt festivals promoted, to the creation of pedestrian routes,
to the actions to raise awareness of the importance of salt "such which" in the community at large, in the
school community, in the scientific community, in the consumer and in the hotel units and
of restoration, to the campaigns of valorisation of salt as an economic, cultural and
tourist, the dissemination of the activity of the marnoto, to the research produced on the history
of the Salgado ... several have been the efforts, actions and projects developed in the sense of
revitalize this activity so very own from this true eco-museum that, from Lavos, the
concelho shares and disseminates attentive to its environmental, social, economic and
cultural.
The Salina of the Cobra Corridor must therefore be seen as an interpretable whole (saline,
warehouse, core and route), functioning as a productive and demonstrative unit, but
also as a training area for new marnovers, as a pedagogical unit, as
laboratory, as a pure and simple fruition ecosystem for nature lovers and
pedestrians, with a global strategy of preservation, maintenance and dissemination of this
activity.

4. Geographic, physical and socio-economic characterization
The freguesia of Lavos is located in the South of the Figueira da Foz's concelain in the district of
Coimbra, on the left bank of the Mondego River, from whose seat concelhia dists about 12
kms. It has as border freguesias Saint Peter and Vila Verde to North; Paiao to Nascent and
Navy of Ondas to South.
With an area of about 44 kms2, Lavos consists of the following places: Armazdepots,
Bizorreiro, Boavista, Cabecinhos, Couple of the Adons, Carvalhais, Baroque, Regalheiras, Santa
Luzia, part of the Outer, Franco and the Costa de Lavos.
Lavos settles on the areais to the South of the Mondego. The primitive hamlet has disappeared little to
little, under the sand: A this phenomenon called "flooding of the sands coming from the sea". To
putting an end to the devasimity of the move-in dunes has found itself a solution in the arborization.
Thus, in 1802 it was handed over to the academician José Bonifácio de Andrade e Silva the function of
5
sow and plant the areals of the coast. But the seedles were mostly destroyed
by the patrolling of the troops of Junot, by the coast, at the French Intressions.
Only in 1906 were they finally sown the grounds of this area to the coast of Lavos,
due to the forest restocking process which, on the occasion, was being carried out
all over the Country. Thus, it was due to the seedlets that the moveable dunes stood
dormant. If this way had not occurred Armazdepots and Regalheiras would already be submerged.
They are lively and contrasting the colours that paint themselves the natural riches of this freguesia. The
white of the salt of the island of Morraceira, the green of the pinhais and eucalyptics, the chestnut of the land
arable finish of revolver, the blue and white of the sea praiing over the sands of the beach of the
Coast of Lavos, the colourful of the boats of its fishermen. Of this locality was considerable
the number of sea men who departed, one day, for the hard faina of the cod fishery
in the seas of the North Atlantic.
It has already kept in the memory the sound of the wrist-wracked iron in the forge of its former blacksmiths of this
freguesia. In the canners and in the expressive attire of their folklore groups remain, in the
however, echoes and colours of traditions that time does not erase or faint.
5. Demography
According to CENSOS 2001, the Lavos freguesia owned 4,171 residents and 3,505 voters
census. In a percentage analysis of this population core approximately 25% of the
inhabitants are children and young people, corresponding 52% to the percentage of adults in age
active. Relatively for the elderly account for approximately 23% of the local population.

6. Erected Heritage:
In Santa Luzia, right in the heart of the freguesia, the beautiful Paroquial Church (séc. XVIII) that
welcomes Our Lady of the Conception, orago of the freguesia, receives also the prayers and
praises to Saint Luzia, of special devotion in the hamlet. It's perhaps the church that stands out the most
among the parochial counterparts of the county, not least by the profusion of elements
decorations.
Highlights: the baptismal sink in stone of Ançã, from the séc. XVI; on the arch-cruise a
image, in wood, of Santa Luzia that welcomes and watches the faithful; the main replank and
collateral, of rococo aesthetics, in gilded wood and marmored in the séc. XVIII; the chapel of the
Confraria of the Santissima Sacramento with the sculptorial representation of the Trinity, in
polychrome limestone, from the séc. XVI; defaced, in the chapel of the Almas, an image, of roca, of the
Pietá . From the chapel-mor stands out the beautiful replank and a Saint School placed in one of the
side edics. The patron is represented on canvas, painted by Pascoal Parente in
1789, placed on the right side wall of the ship. The roof, with its 45 coffins in
wood, is without a doubt worthy of highlight. Despite all the coffins present
different motive, only that of the middle is figurative, representing the padroeira. Finally,
reference to the golden talha organ and marmoreada (séc. XVIII) in the chorus-high. This church
