ELEVATION OF THE SETTLEMENT OF A-OF-THE-FRANCS THE VILLAGE

I-Historical framework

A-of-the-Francs is a settlement of the Queen's Caldas concelho that is home to the

freguesia with the same name, with signs of human presence since time immemorial,

what is attested by its toponym and by the discovery of diverse testimonies

avulous archeological sites.

It is not safe from the origin of its designation, however, many historians attribute the

its origin to the times of Christian reconquest, upon the conquest of this region by D.

Afonso Henriques to Muslims, benefiting from the military aid of the crusaders

coming from the N. of Europe, especially the Francs, as checked for the

achievement of Lisbon. D. Afonso Henriques, in the way of compensation for the support given

by the Frankish crusaders will have ceded to them the lands where this settlement developed, the

which came under the administrative influence of Óbidos until the mid-20 of the sec.

Currently A-of-Francs is a settlement, registered office of the freguesia with the same name,

situated in the concelain of the Queen's Caldas, comarch, Leiria district and diocese of Lisbon

with a setting of 19.78 km² of area.

II-Collective, cultural and associations

Although the-of-the-Francs suffered, in the second half of the séc. XX, a decline in your

population structure, given if it has verified a marked outbreak of emigration, in the

last years saw itself in the reversal of this situation.

In 2001, the Censos ascertained a population of 1223 resident citizens

consequence of agricultural development and the civil construction sector, resulting

of the existing infrastructures and the economic and social dynamism of the county itself

of the Caldas of the Queen. In recent years, the installation of the College Frei Cristóvain has printed

a dynamism to the settlement of A-Dos-Francs, by the presence of about three hundred students,

of teachers and ancillary staff, in a project that works as a factor of

attraction, competitiveness and interaction with the population.

Incidentally, in the case of infrastructure A-of-the-Francs is particularly well

apetchada, availing and surpassing the requirements required by Article 12 of the Law n.

11/82, of June 2.

Today, the existing equipment in the freguesia is repairing the following:

Teaching

-school of preschool education;

-school of basic education;

-a Colégio/EB 2.3, with more than 300 students.

Health

-extension of the Centre for Health;

-Pharmacy

Social support

-People's House with day center and Lar (under construction)

Equipment

-post office at the Junta de Freguesia

-banking agency;

-Church of Our Lady of the Graça and Chapel of St. António;

-Paroquial Center of A-Dos-Francs

-Cemetery;

-Sporting and Cultural Group of A-Dos-Francos;

-Society of Musical Instruction, Cultural and Recreation of A-Dos-Francs,

centenary institution;

-Public municipal swimming pool;

-Agricultural Cooperative of Machinery A-of-Francs

-Commercial establishments.

III-Appreciation of the legal criteria and conclusions

Initially regulated by the provisions of Law No. 11/82 of June 2, the scheme of

creation of freguesias and the designation and determination of the category of the stands is

today deeply altered.

If it is certain that the scheme for the creation of freguesies is regulated by Law No. 8/93, of

March 5, with the wording conferred by Law No. 51-A/93 of July 9, remain

in the normative of 1982 the requirements for the designation and the determination of the category of the

stands.

From the above, it easily occurs that the settlement of A-of-the-Francs brings together

all legal requirements, complemented with your strong historical incidence ,

enshrined in Article 14 of that diploma, in spite of, in that particular, attesting to

township a firm, authentic and very personalized historical past.

It is reaffirmed that firm agricultural, commercial and service activity of A-

de-Francos were responsible for their continued development by ending the

population decrease that occurred up to the 80.

Thus, pursuant to Article 2 of Law No. 11/82, of June 2 and under the

of Article 14º, weighted to reasons of historical nature, the importance of the initiative of the

citizens gathered in associations that develop a remarkable projection work

of the locality and the relevance of the College Frei Cristóvain in the renovation and magnification of the

township on terms not reflected in the main available indicators, the

following draft law:

category of village.
