ELEVATION OF THE SETTLEMENT OF SOZA, IN THE CONCELHO OF VACOS
TO THE VILLAGE CATEGORY
EXHIBITION OF REASONS
I. Antecedents / Historical Reasons
The denomination of Soza dates from time immemorial in a territory that today constitutes the
freguesia of the same name, located in the concelain of Vagos, Aveiro district.
The first document that alludes to the Latin name of Soza reports to the year 1088-
in have uilla sobcia et uilla lliauo.
They will have existed in Soza two churches. One belonging to the Order of Templars and donated
by D. Sancho I à de Rocamador; another dedicated to S. Miguel, where there is the current one. With
the ruin of the first, the Image of Our Lady of Romacator has been transferred to the de
S. Miguel. Date of the twelfth century and is at the guard of the parish museum. The one that is exposed
to the public date of the fourteenth century or XV.
D. Sancho I gave Soza, in 1192, the Saint Mary of the Rocamateur, donation confirmed by
D. Afonso III, D. Dinis and D. Fernando.
Rocamador stays in France, in the department of Lot, raised in high rock
limestone, in which they are staggered the buildings that constitute the Sanctuary of Our
Lady of Rocamador, who was center of great pilgrimage.
The devotion has spread to Portugal, it is not known to what extent, but the right one is that D.
Afonso II and D. Isabel of Aragon left him legacies in the wills.
Had goods in our country, as a house in Coimbra, in the Quintal of the Fuzers that se
finds referred to the year 1360. Soza was the main donation.
The patron of Soza comprised, by donation later to Rocamador, the region of
Mamarrosa and Palhaça (today from the concelho de Oliveira do Neighborhood).
The territory came out of Rocamador's possession in the first half of the XV century.
Pope Pio II confirmed Soza to John de Sousa, as Commendation of the Order of S.
Tiago.

D. Afonso V obtained from Sisto IV, in 1478, that Soza became perpetual Commendation of the
same Order and that the Kings had the padroado.
It was John of Sousa, the Romanisco, who served as an intermediary in the concession of the Bula and the
transported from Rome. The King, on August 8, 1481, being in Évora, before
incorporate Soza, as per the terms of the pontifical document, gave the padroader to the
even, as a reward of the services provided in the papal court, in interest and herty,
with the clause of none of the kings can come to prevent the succession.
D. John II requested the confirmation to the Pontiff, Inocence VIII, which granted it to 21 of

Following on the passing of the sixth lord, Diogo Freire, third grandchild of the first
donator, took care of Soza the second Earl of Miranda do Corvo, Diogo Lopes
de Sousa.
To his son, Count Marquis of Arronches, Henry of Sousa Tavares da Silva, was
disputed the succession, by sentence of 1674.
This pleas was of such importance that, to various titles, he referred to several
jurisconsults.
By family alliance, the Comenda de Soza passed on to the Dukes of Lafões. So if
explains that the padroers appear to be designated by these various titles.
D. Manuel I granted foral to the village of Soza on February 16, 1514.
After the extinction of the Soza's concelho in December 1853, being the last President
Dr. José de Almeida Ribeiro, the village and freguesia of Soza was incorporated into the concelain of
Vacant. It was then constituted by the places of Soza, Boco, Fonton, Lavandeira,
Willow, Pedricosa, Vale das Maias, Listen, Uncle Tinto, Tabusteel and Carregosa.
On January 19, 1934 it was extinguished the civil registration post of the freguesia, by dispatch
published in the Journal of the Government , II Series, of January 2, 1934.
By Decree No. 47033 of May 30, 1966, to the freguesia of Soza were withdrawn the
places of Ouca, Rio Tinto, Carregosa and Tabusteel to "be born" the Ouca freguesia.

II. Economic Activities
Economic activity has relevance in the primary and secondary sectors. The activity
agricultural, dairy and animal husbandry are important in the local economy.
There are cafeteria establishments, pastry shops, markets, construction industry
civil, computer article establishments, insurance mediation, trade fair
electrodomestic, among others.
The opening of a delegation of the Agricultural Credit Box Office is expected soon.
Vacant and the construction of the daycare center of the Soza Social Centre.
III. Equipment, Historical Heritage and Social, Cultural Activity,
Sports and Religious
Soza's freguesia has building from the joint headquarters, extension of the health centre,
schools for pre-primary and basic education, cultural and social centre, complex
sports and pharmacy.
Soza has by orago S. Miguel. The heritage is made up of the ruins of the Convent,
Parochial Museum, Matrix Church, Pelourinho, Fifth of the Most and House of the Morgado of the
Pedrigosa.
The parties and novices are the one of Our Lady of the Angels (first Sunday of
September), St. Ignatius (February 2), Our Lady of the Pilar (August 15), S.
Sebastião, Our Lady of Grace (last Sunday of August), S. João (June 24 and
S. Miguel (September 26).
Soza's freguesia has cultural, social, sporting, religious activities
developed by the following associations:
Social Centre of the Freguesia of Soza;
Columbophile Society of Soza;
People's House of Soza;
Sports Association and Cultural Sozense;
Club of Hunters of the Freguesia of Soza;
Small Singers;
Coral Group S. Miguel;

Brotherhood Lady of the Passes;
Commission on Soza Improvements;
Commission of the Church Plant;

IV. Final Note
The settlement of Soza brings together the requirements set out by Law No. 11/82 of June 2,
to be raised to the category of village. In addition to others, have important reasons of
historical and cultural nature that justifies it.
