DRAFT LAW NO. 127 /X
ELEVATION OF THE SETTLEMENT OF ANCEDE, IN THE CONCELHO DE
BAIÃO, TO THE CATEGORY OF VILLAGE
I-historic Contributus
Ancede, population that stretches along the Douro River, has roots
historical that are lost in time. Having ceded a good portion of your
geographical area (62 years ago) for the creation of the neighbor and young freguish of
Ribadouro, continues to be, in the ensemble of the riparian freguesiers of the
concelho, the first on surface, the third in population and " (...) maybe the
more important freguesia of the county (...) "-as stated by the author
Maria Luísa Carneiro Pinto in the first monograph on Baião, published
in 1949.
The commonly accepted explanation for the toponym "Ancede" is the one that
makes it derivate from the name of a Germanic warrior, Ansedus , although the
popular tradition make reference to an expression used by D. Afonso
Henriques, when this one headed to the monks of the Convent.
The story of Ancede goes back to the times in which the Romans
have occupied the spaces previously dominated by the Castros of the beautifully
landscape of the Ovil Valley, where currently the açude of the mini-
water and the complex of the former textile spinning mill. As testimony
of those times, Ancede brings together, at present, in its historical heritage,
a few vases and bronze coins, ceramic fragments, traces of
2
rectangular houses, a ara dedicated to Jupiter, on the Fifth of Monastery, and
still a necropolis attached to the Old Church of the primitive Monastery of Ermelo.
From the medieval era it stands out the importance, for this population, of the
passage of two lanes from the crossing of the Douro,
similarly framed in the paths that led to Santiago de
Compostela: the one that proceeded from the Douro's Oliveira, underwent the place of the Arch
of Lordelo (where up to the last century existed the "memorial" or
"memorial" of the twelfth century, which contained two graves of personalities
important in the region, and where there is, equally, a painting by Santiago na
Chapel of the Lady of the New Boas) following by the New House, to
Lamb and Amarante, and the one that departed from Porto Manso followed by the " Path
from the Crasto ", to the vicinity of the Ancede Convent, continuing by
Penalva and Eiriz, for Marco from Canavezes. This second itinerary
took advantage of part of a Roman way, before the Chapel of S. Domingos.
However, the greatest testimony to the historical relevance of this freguesia
rests on the existence of its two Conwinds: the former Monastery of
Ermelo, previous to the nationality, from which stands out the Romanesque Church, from
three ships, ranked as National Interest Monument (some
historians maintain that the first construction would be prior to invasion
mourisca, that is, still from the times of the visigotic domination), and the
Convent of Ancede, first of the Order of the Crúzios and, later, of the
Dominicans, equally prior to the Mourbait invasion, or at least
coevo of the foundation of the nationality-for it came to obtain Letter of Couto from
D. Afonso Henriques in 1141. To him he finds himself annexing the present Church
Matrix, which, in addition to its unspeakable architectural value, contains a
precious museological core of art sacra, which includes, in addition to
valuable pieces of paramentry, a Custocustody (which is said to have gone out of the
hands of Gil Vicente), various processional crosses and a safe with the head
3
of the "frade santo", all in silver, and, still, paintings inspired by the School of
Vasco grain and remarkable exemplars of religious statuary.
Add yet to this patrimonial the unmistakable ensembles
sculptors from the octagonal Chapel of the Lord of the Good Despacho, erected in the
framework of the same Church.
Still related to this Convent, and of Romanesque inspiration,
though probably from the séc. XIII, is the ark in granite, with large
decorative wealth, which is found today in the National Museum Soares dos
Reis, from Porto, to which served from grave the important family person of the
region.
On the heritage classification pathway of this entire complex
architectural finds himself contemplated the Convent who, by his
indisputable value, is in the first set of monuments that the
Ministry of Culture has integrated into its programme of reclamation works
heritage of the northern region.
In addition to the religious, cultural and economic importance of the Couto
from Ancede ", then so assigned, other testimonies attest, still
today, the duality and secular importance of this freguesia.
They are an example of this the numerous houses of large families
tradition, many of them crested (being that of Penalva ranked as of
national interest), and where they inhabited writers, parliamentarians, two
civil governors, professors of the University of Coimbra, a rector of the
same University, and ministers of the kingdom. It stands out also the House of
Fifth of Monastery, which contained a true museum of archaeology,
but unfortunately, devastated about 40 years ago by a ruthless
fire.
To these roots is not alhement the fact that, in Ancede, being based
more ancient association of the county, with century and a half of "existence", and
a dynamic school of music: the Ancede Martial Band, founded by
4
D. Miguel de Soutomayor, lord of the House of Esmoriz, writer and
musical composer, to which if they came to join, subsequently, two others
prestigious associations of sport, cultural and social-a
Sports Association of Ancede and the Cultural Sporting Association Arc
United.
In the traditional arts it would be unforgivable not to mention the fame that
cemented in the region the famous "singles" who, since the Middle Ages,
follow the rituals ranging from the "apprentice" to the "master", going through the
"artist" and who often more than the specialized work in
stone canterie, came to produce true sculptural works,
scattered across the Country and abroad.
II-Socio-economic conditions

in the following strands:

beverage companies and a transport network secured by the line
railroad from the Douro-Mosteirô station-and by EN 108 and 321, which
interconnect with both the surrounding populations as well as with the large
centres (Vila Real / Amarante/Porto). This population is, equally, served
by the largest road transport interface, both for the concelho of
Baião, like the neighboring counties that stand on the other bank of the river
Douro, Cinfos and Resende.
6
III-Geo-demographic characterization
According to the data of the Census 2001, the Ancede freguesia of the
concelho de Baião and district of Porto, counts 2618 residents (221.3

In these terms, and in those of Law No. 11/82, of June 2, the settlement of
Ancede brings together the conditions required to be eleved to the village category.

below signed, present, under the constitutional provisions and
