ASSEMBLY OF THE REPUBLIC

DRAFT LAW NO. 192 /X

ELEVATION OF ARONS S. ROMAN, IN THE FAFE CONCELHO, THE CATEGORY

FROM VILA

It is in the year 1014, that for the first time appears a document appearing in the Vimaranis

Munumenta Historical, .which refers to the Arons ' freguesia designating it as " commandment of

Arones ".

There are some who understand that Arons derives from Aron (derived from the Germanic ara-altar).

There are still who ascribe the name Arons to a plant, the will.

However, the understanding is that such a plant only appeared in the Séc. XVIII, when in the Séc. XI already if

knew Arones.

Arons is not, however, exclusive to two freguesies of the Fafè concelain, before there is also

in the concelhos of Macieira de Cambra and of Vila do Conde.

In those of Fafe, as is the case of Arons S. Romão, there are the places of Torre, Quinta and others,

that well denote the existence there of a villa in the old days of the Middle Ages.

It is known that the villas were in general designated by the name of the owner-organizer in

genitive.

A magnate of the Séc is known. IX and X that very well may have been and was for sure, the

founder of the villa or "commandment Arones" or Aronis.

Son of Fernando and of unknown mother, it is called Ero in documents ranging from 899 a to 926.

He married Adosinda and was the grandfather of Hermenegildo Goncalves, husband of the Mumadona celebérrima

Dias, founder of the Monastery of Guimarães.

It is without doubt Ero the father of Gundesinho-"Gundesindus Eroni".

The genitive Eroni instead of Eronis, or rather, next to Eronis, does not surprise anyone,

because as it says and shows José Leite de Vasconcelos, on the pg. 105 of the Portuguese Anthroponymia,

is found in ern Germanic names.

The étimo of Arons is, for, in (villa) Eronis, Herdade de Ero.

It was, for, Ero Fernandes who organized the territory of Arons and conferred on it the name itself.

2

The first of the "Arons" is D, Gil Guedes of Arons, son of D. Guedes Gomes and of D. Urraca

Henriques Portocarreiro.

The division of Arons into two freguesies, Arons S. Romão and Santa Cristina, dates already from the first

Respondents (1220), being on that occasion abbot of S. Romão, Gomes Martins. Some of the

leiras of Arons S. Romão were the property of the King, but the freguery was not from the royal patron.

It is not known though who the patron was.

In Respondents of D. Afonso III (1258), respect of Arons S. Romão, refers to a

fifth is from Martim Gil and his sister.

In addition to this, the church of S. Romão de Afões owned a couple in S. Lourenço de Golães

where D. Martim Gil enjoyed certain rights of partnership with the Monastery of St. ° Tirso.

In The Respondents of D. Dinis (1290), refers to the following: " sam Romaom's freguesia

darõoes. The chemist who call Arons that he of D. Domez and of Lourenço Ganso he prouado

that the honorable uiram who sse would wake up the witnesses and douuida from afar ".

It was for sure in that place that it lived Ero Fernandes, the organiser of the herty. In 1290, still

there lived their descendants in the possession of immemorial rights and in the enjoyment of exemptions due to

quality people.

In 1301 D. Dinis ordered to do other Inquiries and says Aparício Gonçalves, respondent of

1308: " in the ffreguisia of sam Romão darons achey that the quintaam they call the Darons and of

Steuam Garso (Goose) and of other children dsomething that the honrra ".

It is therefore vast the history of the freguesia of Arons S. Romão, who beyond that counts still with

a monument to its Romanesque Church, the origin of which divides scholars. Incidentally, Arons S.

Roman was part of the Guimarães's concelain until 1853, when he went on to integrate the comarch

from Fafe, at the time of the major administrative reform of the kingdom made in that year.

In 1874 it owned only 764 inhabitants. At the beginning of the sèc. XX already had 894.1733 ern 1970.3258

in the year 2001 and today it already exceeds the 4000 inhabitants.

From a village strictly connected to agro-husbandry and handicrafts, Arons S. Romão à much that

has taken a "leap" to the tertiary sector, currently having a strong deployment in the sector

textile, but also in footwear, furniture, marbles, civil construction, production

and export of quality wines, in automotive and other assistance.

Possesses today an economic dynamism and a set of equipment, which take it attractive,

reason why every day that passes more inhabitants has. The fact that you find yourself half way

between the cities of Fafe and de Guimarães is also a factor of great attraction.

The church of Arons-national monument.

The Bulletin of the National Monuments, n ° 59, which is fully devoted to the Church of S.

Roman of Arons, says that this church was founded by D. Gomes de Freitas, in the séc. XI.

The Church of Arons consists of one single rectangular ship, like almost all other

romantic churches built in the rural areas, in our country, covered by roof of wood

with coffins. It has a beautiful chapel-mor, of two tramos, covered by square abrob. The

she sê acede by a triumphal arch of broken archiving that, like the divisional arc of the

cebeceira, settles on capitels decorated with vegetalist motifs, those of the capela-mor-where

run frisks, with scouts, palsocks and lanceolate-and themed those of triumphal arc-

punishment and redemption, animals devouring the sinners and birds drinking from the same cup. Of the

portals highlight for the axial, situated on the western facade-Nascent / Poente axis, once

which reinforces the pathway, altar entrance, is a simple, little-deep, no-columns portal, has

written in the eardrum of the door the Christian symbol "Agnus Dei", that according to elements

discovered would have a richer decoration in the archiving, osattempting the exterior, a "theory"

of heads of animals biting the torus of the frame. Transpost o main portal penetrate

in a space that is structure in function of one ship, relatively higher in comparison

with the chapel-mor, explaining itself perhaps by the late period of its construction.

The church has only one side door, facing south, with a eardrum filled by

inscriptions.

This temple is composed of two rectangular blocks separating functions by volumes. Has

a block added to the body of the ship that today plays, the function of sacristia, to the

same time that serves as a support to the sinking tower, both of which are later construction.

Transposed the main gate we penetrate into a space that structures in one's function

ship, relatively higher compared to the capela-mor, explaining perhaps by the

late period of its construction.

The coverage of this temple, like almost all the Romanese-like temples of these dimensions, is from

wood, but subsequently lined with decorative coffins.

Typical element of the Romanesque building the choir, located at the bottom of the church, has here, in the church

of S. Romão de Arons, a function more to albergate the faithful than by affirmation of a

architectural culture. It's a little bit developed chorus.

The transition between the body of the ship and the body of the chapel-mor makes itself transposing the triumphal arch. The

bedside, with higher pavement and the noblest part of the church, is where they meet

decorative washers.

This one finds itself divided by two tramos with capitels similar to the triumphal arch and with

typically Romanesque decoration.

The penthouse is performed by a cannon pumpple, which such as the triumphal arch is quite

4

broken.

The interior luminance is small, typically Romanesque detail. The light of day comes in

solely by a few frests, all at the same height, rather narrow, type watchmen The

counterstrengths are used as a constructive solution, being important in the structure of the

building, as they are used where greater weight is exerted-in the chapel-mor which is vaulted.

The heavy vaults of the romantic churches exerted great pressures.

To ensure the soundness of the building, massive columns and very thick walls were needed,

in which only if they could make narrow covers, located compulsorily above the

points of support, which should be strengthened also from the outside, by powerful

counter-strong.

Laterally, the blind arcades, for their heavy and deep aspect, also play the

function of counterstrengths.

In the body of the ship the second line of counterstrengths lies by the start-up, precisely in the

same point where there is a difference in the apparatus of the stone.

This church has suffered, over the times, diverse works that have been altering its

original characteristics of Romanesque work, which led to the Directorate General of Buildings and

National monuments to include it in their lifesaving works.

It was restored, having it removed everything that somehow could amskinate or

de-characterize primitive construction, and reopened to worship in 1935.

This church inserts itself into a set of small churches and rural chapels with solutions

quite simple architectural and modest decoration that developed in Portugal

in the Romanesque period, adapting to the economic, social conditions and the characteristics of the

places where they were edified.
