DRAFT LAW NO. 371 /X

ELEVATION OF THE VILLAGE OF PRIOR OLD, IN THE COUNTY OF

LOURES, TO THE CATEGORY OF VILLAGE

I. Historical characterization

The first references to the place of the Prior Old (Loures ' concelho)

reassemblies to the mid-nineteenth century.

The toponym Prior Velho appears to be related to the presence of some

clergyman who there lived, thus having been at the origin of the baptism of the freguesia. Is

also in this period that begins its industrialization.

The development that occurred over the course of the entire twentieth century led to the

creation of the freguesia of Prior Velho in 1989 (by the Decree-Law No. 68/89, 25 of

August). Until that date, Prior Velho has been linked to the freguesia of Sacavém.

The Prior Old has as a patron saint of parish S. Pedro.

In terms of historical heritage, it clearly stands out the Fifth of the

Francella, with your beautiful palmet. The fifth, brazed, boasts galhards traditions

historical and architectural and is ranked as National Monument.

Heraldic

The Prior Old uses the following flag and coat of arms, as published

in the Journal of the Republic, III Series, of 04/29/1999:

2

Weapons: a silver shield, a red-dented wheel between two branches of

olive tree of green, fruity of black; in chief, an ecclesiastical hat of black with

two borlas and, at tip, a cacho of gold grapes sustained by leaves of green.

Silver mural wreath of three towers. Listel white, with the caption of black, in

capital: "PRIOR OLD-LOURES". Flag of green; cords and tassels of

silver and green.

The dentate wheel symbolises the mechanical activities of the first industries to

settle in the area of the freguesia and still with some predominance in the ensemble

existing companies. The two branches of olive evoke the olive groves that punctuated the

territory of the freguesia, of which there is still some toponymy evocative of the same,

as well as, in some places still without construction, the olive trees themselves. The Hat

Ecclesiastical, evocative of the toponym "Prior Velho", in which it originate the name of the

freguesia. Finally, the grape's cacho is a reference to the wine produced on the Fifth of the

Francella.
