2. HISTORICAL NOTE
1. The origin in the concelho of S. Pedro do Sul lies in the ancestral records of the
former concelain of "Lafoens" which dislike "Tres legoas from Vizeu to Northwest" and " that
it sent to pofly by the annos of 1040 Alafoens Mouro, de qugot took name, as it says
Fr. Bernardo de Brito liv. 7. Cap. 28. of the Lusitan Monarchy. It gave him foral El Rey D.
Diniz: has two villas, which sawant the head of this Concelho, namely, that of Saõ Pedro do
South, & that of Vouzella " .
However, they are testimonials from earlier antiquity the anthroponymic toponyms of
germanic origin of some of its freguesias that certainly refer to
previous "villae romanae". Much and varied is, too, the tabelionic documentation
which indicates circulation of property since the eleventh century, among local landlords or
between these and the important monastic domains of the time, such as that of Salzedas or
S. João de Tarouca, the de Paço de Sousa or the Order of the Hospital, or still the cabins
from the Sé de Coimbra and the Sé do Porto.
2. The medieva documentation records, ", the existence of monasteries: the oldest, in the
" place of Lafões, about the South River and the Vouga, will be the one to which, for certain, it refers
the presbyter Troitosendus when, at the end of the first centurion of the eleventh century, it makes
donation from your church "that vocatur Santi Petri in land Alaphoen" to the Sé de Coimbra; the
most remarkable, however, was that of S. Christopher de Lafões, founded or reedified by D.
João Peculiar, bishop of Porto († 1175).
3. The history of the concelain of S. Peter of the South walks intrinsically connected to that of the old
"Villa of the Bath" situated in a " aprazivel Valle, by the meyo of which makes your current the
river Vouga [...] to which it has hounded the famous washed stone bridge with ten arches. He
abundant of bread, wine, azeyte, fruits, cattle, & hunting, & has humas Caldas, where if
curated the great Rey Dom Affonso Henriques " , to whom this same king granted foral
in 1152 that made it "cum all your finish all regalenga" . Here's had solar on so
ancient and illustrious lineage of the Almeidas, of which it was descended " Duarte of Almeyda
who has gained name of disaping in the battle of the Bull, where the enemies nag
podèraõ take out of the hands the Royal pendağ, which as alferes mòr led, otherwise
3
cortandolhas; & being this feyto tam pointed out, naõ is known that by elle had
satisfaçe some ".
4. The toponym S. Pedro do Sul is linked to a popular legend, according to which a
image of S. Peter, coming from a chapel situated in place of South, would have desisted the
river during a full. The popular, managing to remove from the waters the image,
recognized it as "S. Pedro de Sul". In 1514, de D. Manuel granted foral to S.
Peter of the South and who in 1527 was already referred to as "village and head of concelho".
5. The present configuration of the concelho of S. Pedro do Sul results from the reorganization
administrative made by Mouzinho da Silveira. In it they aggregated the ancient villages of the
South-received forays from D. Duarte, D. Dinis and from D. Manuel in 1514 and lost the
status of concelho in 1853; the "village of the Banho"-subsequently called the
Lafões ' broilers, extinct concelho in 1836.
2. ECONOMIC ACTIVITY
1. The economic life of the concelho during the first half of the twentieth century was marked
by the exploration of the tin and the volframio, whose mines are still today
referenced.
At present, an important strand of the economy is forest exploitation and
production and processing of poultry products as well as pastorics and the creation of
cattle. In agriculture it is worthy of note the cultivation of the vine: differentiated from practice
winemaking of the demarcated regions that stay adjacent to it (Douro and Dão), is
designated by "hanged vine" and gives rise to a kind of green wine,
commonly called "green wine from S. Pedro do Sul".
In recent years the trade-with several fairs: the Old Fair (monthly); the New Fair
(monthly); the Trapa and Manhouce's Santa Cruz Fair (Monthly) and the Southern Fair
(on Sundays)-and services have been gaining relief in economic activity as well as
the industry that relies on two industrial parks: the Alto Barro Industrial Park
(in the freguesia of Bordonhos and Carvalhais) and the Bordonhos Industrial Park (na
freguesia of Bordonhos).

2. The Terms of S. Pedro do Sul have, over time, played a role of the
greater relevance to the development and tourism growth of the county. Situated
in the freguesia of the Várzea, recount to the Roman times, then assigned by Balneum .
Its waters are characterised by being sulphurous suns and very radioactive. The
they will have resorted to King D. Afonso to treat a leg after a fall of horse
(others say by having banged on the stings of the Badajoz door in the wake of their
hasty withdrawal). Thankful, he made several donations to the village and the inhabitants of the Banho.
D. Manuel also emerges linked to these terms: he ordered to make several changes to the
edified set that went on to call themselves the Royal Hospital of the Caldas of Lafões.
" In 1884 a the City Hall of S. Pedro do Sul deliberated to build a modern
seaside resort, which succeeding the former Royal Hospital and whose works had started in that
same date.
In 1894 a Queen D. Amélia, accompanied by her two children, there moved in with the
purpose of obtaining the cure for their ills. As a way to mark the stay of
so illustrious visitor, deliberated the House of the season to put in the atrium of the then recent
building a plaque with the crest of the superana, as well as its high-relief bust.
In 1895, a decree was published that determined that the Caldas de Lafões se
past the denomination "Caldas of Queen D. Amélia". Immediately the name of the
sovereign has been assigned to the new seaside resort, which subsists up to the present date.
With the advent of the Republic, the site went on to have the current appellation of Terms of
S. Peter of the South.
" In 1987 was inaugurated a new and broad Termal and partially closed Centre the
Balnearian Queen D. Amélia, in order to be carried out important works of
restoration. This one has been in operation since the middle of September.
2001 and is endowed with the most modern equipment, in order to be practiced the
various termer treatment techniques. The two buildings are currently in
health.
Since the mid-80, the Terms of S. Pedro do Sul are the most important
termal office of our country. Today, it represents about a third of the universe of the
Portuguese aquistas. In the year 1990 the level of frequenters surpassed the
14,500, registering for constant growth until the days of today, which has already reached
the 25,000 ".
5
Recently remodeled, the Terms of S. Pedro do Sul currently count on
four more new swimming pools, new equipment so far non-existum (Bertholaix,
Pedidaix, Hydropressotherapy, fixed hydromassages, duche D ` Aix, circular duche) and
with the magnification and remodeling operated, the Balneário D. Afonso Henriques-now
so called in honour of the first king-see folded up his offer of services,
passing to possess an installed capacity that will be able to go from 40,000 to 45,000
users per year.
The Terms of S. Pedro do Sul were recently distinguished by the Spanish magazine
" Thermaespa " as the best Iberian Thermal Complex.

conferring wide variety of the touristic and cultural choice.
From the very historical-cultural heritage, which in the village of S. Pedro do Sul can be
appreciated, excel:
Swimming pool of D. Afonso Henriques (MN National Monument-28536, DG 66, of 03/22/1938)-
Best known for "Banho", or "Lafões ' Walks", this construction is located in the
epicentre of the present Terms of S. Pedro do Sul, whose springs of water are situated
on the left bank of the river Vouga. It is one of the thermost complexes of Roman origin
better conserved from existing ones in the current national territory. The investigations
archaeological determined that the roman pool outside coated the opus signinum ,
corresponding, most likely, to the zone of cold baths- frigidarium -, once
which seems to find itself stripped of traces of the essential cover in the case of whether
treat of the room intended for the tepid water- tepidarium -or hot- caldarium . It is possible,
however, that it dealt with the natatio , tank of large dimensions traditionally
torn open sky, whose waters were, in this case, brushed off to the river Vouga
through the sewage still visible in the topicality.

Church of the Mercy- Date of the XVIII century and is composed of one nave, chapel-

nineteenth century hosting, for several times, in this solar. The baroque architecture of the
Palace witnesses, precisely, the time when it was built, denoting a
series of features common to so many other edifices of the first barracks of the
eighteenth century. On the main façade, with balcony windows, remailed by fronds of
volutas interrupted, stands out, to the center, the gate, with front-facing also of volutas,
but in whose eardrum figure the coat of arms of the Almeida.
Convent of St. Joseph (IIP Real Estate of Public Interest-32973, DG 175, of 08/18/1943)-No

Saint Peter of the South, who to here moved here in 1842, following the Decree of
Extinction of the Religious Orders, which put an end to the short conventual life of this building. The
church stands out by the staircase that precedes it, bordered by balustrade in the zone
from the low. this composition recalls the frontery of another Franciscan convent,
situated in the city of Viseu-the convent of San Francisco of the Monte. Both denotam
the influence of the baroque architecture, of Franciscan cariz. In the countryside, the salient
gold-shredded stalk, mainly that of the capela-mor, with pseudo-red columns
salomonic. Finally, the cloister, of two floors, is formed by arcades of capitels
of the Tuscan order on the ground floor, and at the second level by similar columns but
assents on quadrangular supports with the chanted corners.
In the villa and in the immediate vicinity it is possible to find some buildings that by your
architectural particularity, deserve here reference: the Palacete of the Correia de
Lacerda, the Palacete of the Counts of the Lapa, the Palmet of Palme-Moniz, the Balneary
Queen D. Amélia and INATEL's Center of Fteries, and still several chapels: Capela de S.
Martinho, Chapel of St. António and the Chapel of S. Sebastião.

Convent of Saint Kitts of Lafões -The conventual foundation has aroused many
doubts and interpretations, but, today, and in the light of documentation, it seems relatively
consensus to consider D. João Peculiar, Bishop of Porto, as founder of this
convent that, from the beginning, embraced the rule of St. Augustine and later that of St.
Bento. Finally, the accession to Cister was last changed to the rule to be observed in the convent,
which occurred on a date close to the year 1161.
During the medieval period, Saint Kitts of Lafões was a very rich institution,
with considerable income. However, and the similarity of good part of the monasteries
cistercians, arrived in the sixteenth century in a state of considerable ruin, due to the
danish management of the comendent abades. The convent, which disused from the usual
dependencies, organized around the cloister, of two floors, formed by five
Perfect back arches and defined by Tuscan order pilasters. The This zone
finds itself incomplete and the church is situated at the south-eastern angle of the cloister.
Rebuilt for the third time in 1704, following a fire, the temple features ship
of square plant.
Stone of the Writing (IIP Real Estate from Public Interest 35532, DG 55, from 15 to -03-1946)-It's about a
monument consisting of a vertically sectioned penedo, having the flat face,
back to the spring, completely covered in engravings, except in two zones,
of which one disaggregates a surface granitic layer, thus losing the
