DRAFT LAW NO. 536 /X

WAVE NAVY LIFT, IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF THE FOZ FIG TREE, TO THE CATEGORY

FROM VILA

Exhibition of reasons

The History

The Ondas Navy freguesia belonged to the ancient concelho of Lavos and Paião, extinct

in 1853. In 1928 it was constituted autonomous freguesia.

The Ondas Navy settlement has existed since 1886 and comes from the agglomeration of several

existing couples the nascent of the main road that runs through the present settlement, couples

those that already existed around 1809.

Part of the territory of the present freguesia, north-west of E.N. 109, belonged to the Couto de Seiça.

To the Cistercian monks of the Monastery of Seiça if it will have become the duty the impetus given in these

land to the settlement and agriculture. Another part of its territory (the potent of E.N. 109) has made

part of the Couto de Lavos. It is argued that in the times when the shoreline was more to

east that the current one, had here existed salt navies, reason incidentally that would have justified the

choice of toponym.

The Beach of Leirosa is certainly its oldest settlement, initially characterized

how grouping of pads (in very apparent with those of the Cova and the Coast of

Lavos). Land of fishing and fishermen par excellence started by knowing activity

seasonal practiced by men coming from the countryside who here launched networks of half-ways. The

its most expressive hamlet will have started in 1865 by boost from Jose Francisco da

2

Silva, son of José da Silva, fisherman of the Arts of drag, since 1815, on the Coast. Of your

cabins on the beach, covered in straw (or reversal ), there are no traces left, nor

even of those that, in wood, replaced them, some with rés-of-the-floor, in adobe, and floor

top in wood with balcony facing the front and outer staircase. With the

appearance of the brick and concrete, these dark wood buildings and fustigated by the

wind and sea air have disappeared and the Praia da Leirosa has taken up new configuration,

losing individuality. The saver was the fishing boat here adopted by the sneezes

(so called the fishermen of the Praia da Leirosa) apt, by its configuration, to win the

contrariness of the rebending, dangerous but customary, on homeless beaches. The festivities

religious of the Praia da Leirosa honram, as it could not cease to be, who protects the

fishermen. Our Lady of Good Travel is the local patron, to whom men and women

indulging in prayers asking for blessing and protection for sea travel.

Without a doubt that the biggest boost to the development of Navy of the Waves has become the

duty to the installation, in 1965, of the pulp industry (Celbi) which, with the industry of

paper production (Soporcel, 1984), in the nearby freguesia of Lavos, come employing, since

your installation in this region, a very significant number of local labour.

In addition to the fishing fainter to which the coastal population continues to be devoted, agriculture

keeps feature for little more than family subsistence.

It stands out, however, from this scenario the Fifth of the Cooks, located in the place of Matas.

With an area of about 100 hectares, it maintains 12 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of

different vine varieties. From among them predominate the Baga (or Dusty ) in the paints, and the

Maria Gomes (or Ferno Pires ) on whites. Your wine cellar, well equipped for the

enological treatment of the grapes, associates modern technology with the tradition, preserving the

traditional stone ponds, on par with modern cubas inox . The acknowledged quality of the

wines from the Fifth of Cozinheiros today places the county on the national wine route.

The Legend of the Lady of the Waves

It is realized that, around 1600, a name miller Fernando, inhabited a mill of

water next to the ribeiro who came from the Lines Lagoon and was going to disemboed in the sea next to the site

where he later founded the settlement of fishermen from the Leirosa. This miller that

periodically carried flour to the distant places of Coimbrão, would have found in a

of your travels, the image of a Saint. Later, one your family member will have built a

ermida where it placed the image, giving it the name of Lady of the Waves.

Wanting the people to reinforce this story, it is also realized that, between 1725 and 1770,

confronting certain ship crewman with a violent storm and risk of

shipwreck, promised to erect a Chapel to Our Lady of the Waves if it happens to be

vessel and crew to save themselves. So going on, it was fulfilled the promise and,

in this way, it would have been built the chapel, in 1744, in honour of the Lady milagreira.

The primitive temple would, however, be set on fire by the wave of destruction left by the

french invasions. The image of the patron has been removed from the flames and given to guarding a

family who later set up residence in Cascais, however, lost the

whereabouts.

When it was finally found, returned and restored, the image of the padroeira retook

your place in the chapel.

At the end of the last decade of 50 with an aim to apply for parish constitution

autonomous (1958), this chapel was provisionally elevate to the category of Church. However,

another larger temple was projecting. The new Paroquial Church nascia and would be inaugurated in

January 1961.

The Traditions

Party of the Holy of Turks

The Capela de S. Jorge takes the name of the sympathic settlement that started to form in the middle of the

charneca and the pinhais by the mid-sec. XIX.

Small, of truly popular fetion, especially embellished by its alpendre

on the main façade, only opens once a year, on the Sunday Gordo, to receive the

payment of the promises made to S. Jorge, here popular and fondly called the

"Holy of Turks". " Formerly, they saw cars of oxen, wagons and animals giving several

turns to the chapel, in the fulfillment of promises of the devotees. The sale of the pig's foot reaches the

height of the party, followed by music that starts the balleric. It's an uncontrolled party by the

church, from eminently popular root ". (Manuel da Costa Cintrão). A tradition that counts
