DRAFT LAW NO. 535 /X
ELEVATION OF ST. PETER, IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF THE FIG TREE OF FOZ, À
CATEGORY OF VILLAGE
Exhibition of reasons
The origins
The settlement of the Cova was started in the finals of the séc. XVIII by a group of fishermen
Ilhavenses that, seeking better opportunities on this piece of sea, around here set.
Later, from its growth to Este, in the riparian zone, the hamlet of the Gala would be born,
so intrinsically linked to that of the Cove that, even today, it is difficult to realize where to pass the
border that separates them.
However, despite possessing the same origin, identity and culture, even though they live
the same dramas and ambitions, Cova and Gala rival each other by bairrism, as if from a
only people after all didn't treat themselves. Rivalry this one that, in tone of grace, always recalls in the
popular, but that the time and adoption of lifestyles, increasingly
cosmopolitan and oriented to diverse destinations, comes diluting.
From the 2ª half of the sec. Nineteenth succeeding the generations of fishermen who rumed on the
banks of the Newfoundland and Greenland, in the immense luggish cod, in demand of the faithful
friend . bitter life, difficult, that of those times, not least as long as cod fishing
has made it to the line, lonely, to two palms of the gélido mar, at the mercy of all the setbacks.
2
The streets of the Cova-Gala were then silent, semi-deserted ... the hearts squeezed, from
black dresses, during the long months of absence of the men from the sea.
The cod industry has become a factor of the greatest importance for the local economy.
The shipyards, in active repair and shipbuilding, the drought of the Morraceira cod, the
salt marines, the fishing companies, the shipowners, the large storers,
several were the working fronts that, on land, depended on the faina larger .
Fining the age of cod fishing, local fishermen embraced trawling and fishing
siege.
The artisanal fishing, in the estuary of the Mondego River, which came to be making extension poor and
complement of poor family income, is seeking to rehabilitate itself with the new infra-
structures offered by the recently built "gate of the Gala".
This is today, too, a markedly industrial and port freguesia, with shipyards
naval, lota, fishing port and a number of different small and medium industries
dimension sitas in the Morraceira and in the industrial zone of the Gala.
This freguesia integrates still two important equipment in the areas of health and action
social: the District Hospital of the Figueira da Foz, S.A. (Gala) and the recent Geriatric Center " Louis
Viegas Nascimento " belonging to the Bissaya Barreto Foundation (Cabedelo).
The recent History
The hamlet of the Cova and the Gala belonged administratively to the Freguesia of Lavos, until
1985, as well as the Cabedelo and part of the Morraceira belonged to the Freguesia of São Julion.
3
In 1974 the inhabitants of the Cova and the Gala, of the Freguesia of Lavos, presented to the Minister
of the Internal Administration a petition for the creation of a new Freguesia, with the
designation of St. Peter's Freguesia, making it feel an old aspiration much earlier to the
April 25, 1974.
The first Draft Law was presented by a group of Socialist Party MPs
in 1978, with the No. 154 /I, for the creation of the Cova Gala Freguesia, suffering soon in the year
following some changes, such as the replacement of the title for Freguesia of St. Peter and
setting your limits.
But on April 17, 1984 alone was proposed to the Assembly of the Republica the Draft Law
definitive, with paragraph 315 /III, endorsed by the MPs of the Socialist Party Henrique Vieira
Gomes, Manuel Alegre, Monteiro Littery, Dinis Alves, Maria Ângela Pinto Correia and Joseph
Cunha and Sá.
Finally, at the Plenary Meeting of the Assembly of the Republic of the day July 11, 1985 was
passed the creation of the Freguesia of St. Peter, in the Councelho of the Figueira da Foz, date this that
the Autarcas of the time attributed it as the name to the main Avenue of the Freguesia signaling,
thus, this historic event.
This approval gave rise to Law No. 96/85, which came into force on October 9, 1985,
date that is part of the toponymia of the freguesia.
It was thus consummated the dream of many years of the Cova Galense people, who saw in this act
the possibility of managing the fates of their land, where practically everything was lacking.
4
The Geographical and Demographic Characterization
With an Area of 89 hectares, this freguesia is situated on the left bank of Rio
Mondego, five kilometres from the centre of the City, confronts the North with the Freguesias of
Are Julion and Green Village, the nascent with the Island of the Morraceira, the south with the Freguesia of Lavos
and the Poente with the Atlantic Ocean, being part of the five freguesies (São Julio, Vila
Green, Buarcos, Tavarede and St. Peter's) that make up the City of Figueira's urban zone
of the Foz.
The Socio-Economic Characterization
St. Peter's freguesia was in the last decade of 80 an immense areal, sprinkled from houses,
on its vast majority of first floor.
With very little planning, the basic infrastructures were non-existor and the
paved troublings would be just over six: Av. Remígio Falcão Barreto, Rua Prof.
Bissaya Barreto, part of the street of St. Peter, Rua Prof. Marques Cadima, the Street that gave
access to the Cabedelo and the Bathing Colonies and the old 109, today Av.12 July.
Its inhabitants were living essentially from the fishing and shipyards sector,
being that trend to change slowly with the recent installation of the Port of Fisheries and
of the opening of the Foz Figueira District Hospital in this locality.
The trade that gave support to the approximately 2,000 inhabitants of the freguesia was made up of
some grocery stores that had, together, wine shops and snacks, two coffees in the Cova
and others so many in the Gala.
5
Despite the great initial effort moved by your Autarcas to alter the big and severe
problems that existed, still in the 90, the Freguesia of St. Peter was of the most
caries from the Fire Figueira Concelho.
However, the freguesia of St. Peter was developed in a harmonious and orderly manner and,
paired with all the infrastructures created, there has also been a growth
sustained.
Due to the good prospects of future, new and entrepreneurial entrepreneurs here if
have installed and invested in modern industries and coméros and various types, which have come
bring a great dynamism to freguesia, thus, as a new soul.
It is noticeable that in these last fifteen years the Freguesia of St. Peter has taken a leap
qualitative in its development. Today, its approximately 4,000 inhabitants practically
do not need to get out of the freguesia in order to get the essentials for their lives.

By mid-June they start to return to the Cova-Gala many of their children emigrated
mainly by coastal lands of the United States of America. Iarise the blinds, arejam-
if the houses and unfurled proudly in the windows the flags of the country of
reception, sign that you have arrived with the heart espoused of longing, but already a
little divided between two berths: the one who packed their past and the other in which the
your children see growing up.
6
The streets animate themselves in every reunion. It is both party and leisure time and are welcome the
bathers who arrive to lease home for vacations, or those who choose to ride tents
in one of the two parks of Campismo of the freguesia.
About 5 km of beaches of white and fine sands and protected dunes are prepared
with all the infrastructures to receive the summer animation.
At the North end the same beach of the Cabedelo, where Wellington landed in 1808 with
its troops to drive out the French invaders who plagued the Figueira, is today the elected
for the practice of surf , of windsurf , bodyboard or from kitesurf , and has already received, even, championships
world of modalities. The school of surf here existing, oversea oversea, can be a
precious aid for anyone who, on holiday, decides to initiate themselves in this radical sport. The line of
coast between the Cabedelo and the Cova is divided by paredons, forming small and
inviting beaches that offer all the necessary infrastructure for bathing tourism
(parking, accesses to the beach, surveillance, bars and restaurants).
