DRAFT LAW NO. 760 /X

ELEVATION OF VILARINHO, CONCELHO DE SANTO TIRSO, DISTRICT

FROM THE PORT, TO THE CATEGORY OF VILLAGE

EXHIBITION OF REASONS

Framework

Located on the nascent border of the county of Santo Tirso, on the hillside over the river

Vizela, on its left margin, the freguesia of Vilarinho borders on the

freguesias from São Salvador do Campo, Saint Martin of the Field and St. Mamede of

Negreles, from the same concelho, and with the freguesies of Neighborhood Calves, Barroses

(St. Eulalia), Lustosa and Moreira de Cosnegos, from the concelhos of Vizela, Lousada and

Guimarães respectively.

Dist 11km from the seat of the municipality, 5km from Vila das Aves and 7km from Vizela. Enter yourself

in the urban continuum of the Ave Valley and its township has mainly done itself along the

its dense network of paths and roads.

According to the typology of urban areas, defined by the INE, Vilarinho is a

APU, that is, predominantly urban area.

Historical reasons

The testimonies of human occupation in Vilarinho recount at the beginning of the

nationality.

Over the centuries, Vilarinho has lived around his monastery. It was this one from Negos

Rulers of St. Augustine and, say some authors, will have been a secular abbey

2

very rich, founded previously at 1070, for grave of the fidalgos of the generation of the

Fafes. Its abbot, Gonçalo Anees Fafes, founded together with this temple a convent,

in which it applied the rents of its abbey and from which it was its first lifetime abbot. The

construction of the monastery was started in 1070 and in 1074 it was already completed and it was

inhabited by 10 conegs. The Monastery of Vilarinho comes abundantly

documented in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, namely, in the " Censual of the Cabido of the Sé

from Porto " (1120).

The patron of the freguesia was annual healing and the presentation of the Regrating Copies of the

Monastery of Landim, until its extinction.

In 1220, Vilarinho belonged to the Julcattle of Refojos and, in 1258, passed to

Guimarães. In 1836 it went on to integrate the São Tomé de Negrelos concelho and into

1885 passed definitely to the concelho of Santo Tirso.

Geographical, demographic, social, cultural and economic reasons

According to the Censos 2001, Vilarinho has 4,036 inhabitants, which perks a

population density of more than 700 inhab/km 2, value which gives it a character

urban.

About 30% percent of the resident population is not natural to the freguesia, which mirrors well the

its attractiveness regarding freguesias of other concelhos (21% of the population

resident is natural from other freguesies of the county of Santo Tirso), but also

relatively to other freguesies of the county of Santo Tirso (9%). Of marking

also its great demographic dynamism -between the 1991 and 2001 a censuses

population of the freguesia grew by 9.85%, value above the average of the county and the Ave.

This can be explained by the relative economic dynamism of the freguesia, a

time that about 32% of the resident population works in the freguesia itself, which

demonstrates that there is there a remarkable job exchange.

Although Santo Tirso is a charneira concelain among the Metropolitan Area of the

Porto and the Ave Valley, Vilarinho is a typical Ave. Valley freesthesia. From your

3

resident population employed, 85% is affecting the secondary sector, and within this

and almost in its entirety to the textile industry. This percentage, despite the fact that it came to

suffer a slight decrease, mirrors the dependence of the population in the face of textile.

As for the primary sector, its importance has been diminishing to the logo of the

last years. In the last censuses only 1% of the employed population was affecting the

this sector. However, there are still some cases where agriculture continues to

be a secondary activity, complementary to family income. Right is that the

agricultural fields, landlocked in the built territory, continue to mark the

landscape of the freguesia, which is mainly due to the maintenance of some large

Quintas, such as the Fifth of Burgo or the Fifth of the Custs.

On December 31, 2006, there existed more than 3,000 voters in the freguesia of

Vilarinho, fulfilling the art. 12 of Law 11/82 of June 2, which states how

condition for elevation of a freguesia the village the existence of more than 3,000

voters.

As far as the required collective equipment is concerned, Vilarinho possesses:
