1 DRAFT RESOLUTION No. 148/X proposes a referendum on abortion held by choice of the woman in the first ten weeks In Socialist electoral program, read the following: "the PS has on the decriminalisation of abortion a very clear position. It's been six years since the referendum on this issue. During these six years, the Country watched a succession of women trials for the crime of abortion that confronted our society with an obsolete and unjust law. The PS is committed to fostering a new referendum on the decriminalisation of abortion, in accordance with previously submitted to the popular vote, and will hit hard by your approval by the Portuguese ". This text was postponed without any changes to the program of the XVII constitutional Government. In this way, we must comply with what is an electoral commitment, but also an imperative of conscience for many Portuguese and Portuguese. The Socialist Party has shown a clear will to fulfill repeated this election commitment urgently as possible taking into account the existing legal and constitutional framework. The question that best embodies the electoral compromise endorsed by most Portuguese is the one that was submitted to popular vote for over 8 years, in a referendum held on 28 June 1998. The holding of a new referendum put to the electorate the question of the referendum of 1998 is, moreover, a clear expression of the strength of the convictions of the PS on this topic. On the other hand, that question seems to take advantage from a technical point of view on other hypotheses that were subsequently the subject of parliamentary debate. 2 Accordingly, the undersigned Members have the following draft resolution: the Assembly of the Republic decides on the terms and for the purposes of articles 115 and 161, (j)), of the Constitution, presenting the Hon. the President of the Republic the proposal to hold a referendum in which voters listed on the national territory are called upon to give its opinion on the following question: "do you agree with the decriminalisation of voluntary interruption of pregnancy, if carried out, by choice of the wife, in the first 10 weeks, in legally authorized health establishment?"
