The Republic of Latvia Cabinet of Ministers Regulations No. 154 in 2001 (April 3. No 14) minimum safety requirements for dietary supplements and requirements marking Issued under the food surveillance law article 4, second and third subparagraphs, and article 13, third part i. General questions 1. these provisions lays down minimum safety requirements for food products, used in limited quantities a poor or unbalanced nutritional enrichment and prepacked capsules as well as gel, liquid, powder or tablet form (hereinafter referred to as dietary supplements) and labelling requirements.
2. Dietary supplements is not irrelevant as an additional power source, except for special dietary supplements intended for extreme conditions employed persons (such as firefighters, athletes) and used by the medical people direction.
3. Dietary supplements distributed only prepackaged.
4. Dietary supplements may include one or more of the following components: 4.1 vitamins;
4.2. minerālelement;
4.3. plants, parts, excerpts, metabolic or processed products;
4.4. micro-organisms or their metabolic products processing;
4.5. the metabolism of animal origin or processed products.
5. Dietary supplements of vitamins and minerālelement included in the daily dose must not be over-give this provision in annex 1 the maximum daily dose.
6. plants and parts thereof, which prohibits the use of food supplements, these rules are specified in annex 2.
7. Food supplements limited-use plants and parts thereof, as well as the allowable maximum of vitamins and minerālelement daily nutritional supplements intended for extreme conditions employed persons, specified in the regulations in annex 3 and 4.
II. distribution of food supplements 8. Latvia permitted to distribute only in recognized dietary supplements.
9. product recognized as nutritional supplements in the Latvian food centre, which carried out the inspection and document the decision. If the decision is positive, the Latvian food Centre issued an opinion in accordance with the opinion of the Minister of welfare approved issuance and cancellation procedures.
10. to receive the opinion of the applicant for the product (manufacturer or distributor) submitted to the Latvian food centre: 10.1. application, which contains the following information: 10.1.1. manufacturer or importer's name and address;
10.1.2. the name of the product;
10.2. regulations technical documentation or the product description, which specifies the characteristics of the product, composition, specific ingredients and their quantity;
10.3 information about the composition of the product to existing plants, including their full name in Latvian and Latin, as well as each plant part used (such as flowers, root), and type (for example, extracts, powder), a biologically active substance names, the use of certain plant types, the permissible dose limits and alerts about special storage, use or possible risks;
10.4. the labelling of the model;
10.5. the operating instructions;
10.6. the manufacturer of the product issued a declaration of conformity, approvals or regulations established in Latvia officially recognised abroad issued product, process or service conformity assessment or certification.
11. If the change in composition of the product declared, the production or the conditions of use, the applicant shall inform the Latvian food centre, which assessed the recognition again.
12. Expenses associated with the provision of the document referred to in paragraph 10, shall be borne by the applicant for inspection in accordance with the approved fees the Minister of welfare service pricing. Payment for this service receives the Latvian food centre.
III. Marking 13. Dietary supplements labelled legislation on food labelling in order to include the following additional indications: 13.1. "food supplement";
13.2. list of ingredients, which contains the names of plants, and Latvian Latin;
13.3. the net quantity expressed in ml (liquids), g (powders, gels), or number of units (tablets, capsules) packaging;
13.4 daily intake;
13.5. limitations of use, if any;
13.6. the total quantity of each nutrient.
14. the dietary supplements regulations in the technical documentation, instructions for use in the labelling, advertising material and other information in reference to the use of the content of the medical claims.
15. in compliance with those provisions of national supervision and control by the state sanitary inspection.
IV. final question 16. paragraph 8 shall enter into force on 1 May 2002.
