Established in May 2000, and placed with the Prime Minister, the Pension Orientation Council is composed of parliamentarians, representatives of professional and trade union organizations, members of the administration and experts. It is responsible for monitoring and analysing the medium- and long-term changes in pension plans and the situation of retirees; It is also responsible for making proposals in this area.
Retirement systems facing the crisis in France and abroad
Symposium organized by the Retirement Orientation Council on 3 December 2009
Retirement Orientation Board
The reforms of the pension systems, which have taken place in the nineties in developed countries, have sought to address the challenges posed by the ageing of the population, with the arrival at the retirement age of many generations of the baby boom and the extension of life expectancy to the high ages.
The current crisis, first financial and then economic, poses different problems to pension systems, in addition to those related to population ageing.
The purpose of the symposium was to analyze the effects of the crisis on pension systems in France and abroad (Belgium, Canada, Spain, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom) ―with three more developed case studies on France, Germany and the United Kingdom ―, and to question the framework for analysis and future management of pension systems.
The annexes include the June 2009 Pension Orientation Council Letter on the Piloting of Pension Systems Reforms and Automatic Stabilization Mechanisms.

All of these proposals were presented to the Prime Minister at a solemn plenary meeting on February 9, 2010.
