The trial schedule and the number of places available for each competition are set, annually, by order of the Minister of Defence.
The formalities to be performed by the candidates, in particular the conditions under which they establish and address their application file, as well as the list of examination centres are defined by order of the Minister of Defence.

  • CHAPTER IER: GENERAL ORGANIZATION Article 8 Learn more about this article...


    Contests include written proof of eligibility.
    Except for the competition 1° of Article 8 of Decree No. 2008-946 of 12 September 2008, which does not include sporting events, competitions include oral and sporting admissions.
    Only registered candidates who are eligible for the written eligibility test are allowed to attend the admission examinations.

    When a contest has one or more optional tests, the final choice of the option(s) is expressed by the candidate in his application for the contest.

    At the request of any candidate who has been granted an exemption under Article 2-I of the above-mentioned decision of 9 November 2004, the president of the jury shall, according to the infirmity presented, arrange the proceedings of the tests.

    The organization of each competition requires the establishment of the following organizations:
    1° A jury comprising:
    - an officer-general of gendarmerie, president, assisted by an officer-general or superior of gendarmerie, vice-president, and, for the competitions provided for in Appendix I to this Order, a second vice-president, personality of the academic or scientific world or senior civil officer of gendarmerie;
    - corrections of written proofs;
    – Examiners of oral examinations;
    - civil or military psychologists;
    - officers responsible for the organization and control of the organization and the control of the execution of the sporting events.
    The Chair, the Vice-Chair(s) and proofreaders constitute the Eligibility Commission.
    The President, the Vice-President(s), the Examiners of Oral Tests and, for examinations other than that provided for in 1° of Article 8 of Decree No. 2008-946 of 12 September 2008 referred to abovecivil or military psychologists and officers responsible for the organization and control of the execution of the sporting events are the admission commission.
    Members of the jury are appointed annually by the Director General of the National Gendarmerie.
    The secretariat shall be provided by an officer who has no deliberative voice or advisory voice;
    2° A supervisory committee in each written examination centre, chaired by a senior officer and bringing together the officers responsible for the monitoring of the trials.
    The president and members of each supervisory committee shall be appointed by the commanders of the gendarmerie region located at the headquarters of the defence zone or the commander of the overseas gendarmerie, responsible for the physical organization of the examination centres.

    The list of candidates authorized to compete is decided by the Director General of the National Gendarmerie.
    These candidates are summoned to undergo the examinations by the authority responsible for the organization of the examination centre, as defined in Article 11 of this Order.

    Written tests, recorded from 0 to 20, are subject to a double anonymous correction.
    Any rating equal to or less than 4 out of 20 to one of the eligibility tests, with the exception, where it exists, of the foreign language composition test, is eliminated.
    The nature, form and programme of the written examinations are set out in the annexes to each examination.

    Any candidate who does not attend any of the written examinations is present there after the time fixed for the start of the tests or does not issue a composition sheet at the end receives the zero mark for this test.
    Any infringement of the regulation, fraud or attempted fraud on the occasion of any of these tests results in the award of the zero mark for the test and, where applicable, the interruption of the test for the candidate concerned.

    At the end of the correction of the written examinations, the eligibility committee for each competition:
    establish an anonymous list of ranking of candidates in order of merit;
    ― proposes to the Director General of the National Gendarmerie the total number of points over which it considers that candidates may be declared eligible.
    In the light of the Commission's proposal, the Director General of the National Gendarmerie shall, in alphabetical order, determine the nominative list of eligible candidates.

  • CHAPTER III: ORAL PREUVS AND ADMISSION SPORTS Article 16 Learn more about this article...


    Oral and sporting examinations take place, for each competition, in a single examination centre.
    Candidates must present on the first day oral examinations for which they are summoned a medical certificate mentioning, on the one hand, the physical fitness provided for in the above-mentioned decision of 9 November 2004 and, on the other hand, the ability to undergo sporting tests when they exist.

    Oral tests are reported from 0 to 20.
    The nature, form and programme of oral examinations are set out in the annexes to each competition.

    Sports competitions are reported from 0 to 20.
    They take place under the control of officers, assisted by physical and sporting training monitors.
    The nature, form, coefficient and scales of the sporting events are set out in the annexes to each competition.

    Candidates must perform the various sporting competitions in the same order.
    Candidates of the competition set out in Appendix I who conducted the same tests during the calendar year as part of the admission examinations to the major military schools can submit a performance statement. This statement is to be produced before the competition's sporting events are performed.
    Any candidate who does not attend the sporting event may, by a decision of the officer responsible for the sporting events of the contest in question, be allowed to be tested with another series. If the event is scheduled at a later date, the candidate will return all the sporting events.
    If required by atmospheric circumstances, the president of the jury may, on the proposal of the officers responsible for the control of the sporting events, decide to postpone one or more of the tests.

    Subject to the provision of the necessary supporting documentation, the candidate who is granted an exemption under section 2-I of the above-mentioned decision of 9 November 2004 shall be exempted from sporting events. Its general average is calculated on all the tests it has undergone without taking into account the coefficient assigned to the sporting events.

    Any candidate who, without valid reason, is notified to the admission commission in a timely manner, does not present himself to any of the admission tests or who presents himself after the summoning hour shall receive the zero mark for this test.
    Any infringement of the regulation, fraud or attempted fraud on the occasion of any of these tests results in the award of the zero mark for the test and, where applicable, the interruption of the test for the candidate concerned.

    A candidate who does not attend the admission test, for a duly recognized force majeure, may be allowed to undergo this test at a later date that must be placed before the end of the admission tests. When the incapacity is medical, this decision is made after advice from a military doctor. In any case, any test not carried out is sanctioned by the zero mark.

    Any candidate having:
    ―takes a grade less than 8 out of 20 at the general fitness test;
    ―takes a grade of less than 4 out of 20 at one of the other oral examinations, except for the oral examination of the competition 1° of Article 8 of Decree No. 2008-946 of 12 September 2008 referred to above ;
    ∙ a rating of less than 5 out of 20 at one of the sporting events or an average of less than 7 out of 20 for all sports events, with the exception of candidates referred to in sections 20 and 22 of this Order.

  • CHAPTER IV: ADMISSION Article 24 Learn more about this article...


    After the completion of the admission examinations, the admission commission shall establish for each contest the list of classification of candidates in order of merit. Candidates who have obtained an electrifying rating at either of the admission tests are excluded from this list.
    For the competition 1° of Article 8 of Decree No. 2008-946 of 12 September 2008 referred to above, candidates classified ex aequo at the end of the examinations are first chosen according to the grade obtained at the oral admission test and, if necessary, according to the classification at the end of the eligibility tests and then, in the event of equality, according to the grade obtained at the general culture test.
    The Admission Commission proposes to the Director General of the National Gendarmerie the number of points above which it considers that the candidates may be declared admitted.

    The Director General of the National Gendarmerie shall, by contest, decide on the list of candidates:
    a list of candidates declared admitted;
    - a supplementary list;
    ―the date from which it can no longer be appealed to candidates from the supplementary list.
    These lists, established by order of merit, are published in the Official Journal of the French Republic.

    A N N E X E I

    CONCOURS ON OVERVIEW OF TITULAR CANDIDATS VALIDING THE END OF THE FIRST YEAR OF MASTER GRADE OR A SCOLARITY CERTIFICATE VALIDING THE PREVIOUS ANNOUNCED FOR THE ATRIBUTION OF MASTER GRADE

    (1° of Article 6 of Decree No. 2008-946 of 12 September 2008 referred to above)

    CONCOURS ON OVERVIEW OF THE CIVIL FUNCTIONING OF THE STATE, TERRITORAL COLLECTIVITIES, PUBLIC AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANISM

    (2° of Article 6 of Decree No. 2008-946 of 12 September 2008 referred to above)
    I. - Nature, form and programs of eligibility tests

    Eligibility tests include:
    – a general culture test (duration: 5 hours); coefficient 5);
    – a case synthesis test (duration: 4 hours); coefficient 5);
    – an optional test (duration 4 hours); coefficient 6).

    1.1. General culture test

    This test is intended to highlight, in addition to the knowledge and personal ideas of the candidates, their general qualities of style, clarity of mind, judgment and method.
    It consists of drafting, with or without the help of documentation, a duty on a general subject relating to the evolution of ideas and political, economic and social facts in France and in the world since the beginning of the 19th century.

    1.2. Synthesis of case

    This test aims to determine the suitability of candidates to identify the essential ideas of a file and to return them in writing in the form of a clear, precise and concise presentation.
    It consists of the writing in three pages maximum of an objective synthesis, devoid of any personal appreciation, built according to a classical plan (introduction, development, conclusion). It is entirely written and only large parts can possibly be preceded by a title.
    The file, with a maximum volume of twenty pages, gathers documents of various origins (press extracts, books, statistical data...) relating to ideas or news facts.

    1.3. Optional test

    This test shall, at the option of the candidate, bear one of the following:
    - economic and human geography;
    - history;
    - Economics;
    management;
    Mathematics;
    physical;
    chemistry;
    biology;
    information and communication technologies;
    criminal law;
    administrative law;
    constitutional law and public freedoms;
    - Community and European law;
    international relations;
    ― languages (choice: German, English, Spanish, Italian).
    (a) Economic and human geography option:
    This test consists of drafting, without the assistance of documentation, a duty relating to one of the issues in the following program:

    Population distribution worldwide

    Demography:
    the natural movement of the population:
    – the basic data (birth, mortality, natural balance, age structures, gender, age pyramids...)
    – the factors of evolution (scientific and technical, economic and political, cultural and religious...)
    migratory movements:
    - internal migration;
    international migration;
    - demographic results (perspectives and forecasts): different types of countries (structures and changes).
    People:
    – the inequalities of the people and their explanations (natural and historical, economic, social and cultural);
    ―population and development (double inequality):
    - old country and young countries;
    rich and poor countries;
    ― opposition of centres and peripheries:
    - the urban explosion;
    rural areas;
    the state of the world in 2020; the effects of population growth, ageing, strengthening contrasts of wealth and economic dynamism, tensions and potential conflicts.

    the city (its organization and operation);
    urban cities and towns:
    - urban functions and activities;
    urban society (its structures and behaviours);
    - the urban space and its differentiation (centre and periphery, the suburbs, the extension of the urbanization and its consequences);
    - recent, economic, social and cultural changes; their spatial expression; the crisis of cities;
    – the growth of large cities; metropolises and megapolises; quantitative and qualitative concentration, concentration of wealth and poverty. Socio-spatial segregations. Tensions and conflicts;

    Vacuum electrostatic and linear and isotropic dielectric media: electrostatic field, potential. Gauss' Theorem. Driver balance. Condensers.
    Electrocinetic:
    - laws of circuits. Networks. Sources of tension. Power sources. Continuous currents, alternative currents. Complex electrical impedance. Power in continuous and sinusoidal systems;
    – free, forced and maintained electrical oscillations. Resonance. Electromechanical analogy;
    ― the production and distribution of electrical energy. Electrical security.
    Magnetostatic vacuum and linear and isotropic magnetic media: magnetic induction. Magnetic force.
    Electromagnetic and self-induction induction: electromagnetic force. Electric generators.
    Maxwell's Equations:

    ― an individual interview, conducted by a psychologist, to inform the president of the jury on the suitability of the candidate for employment. This interview requires no specific preparation and includes written tests and oral interview;

    This is to climb to the smooth rope in free style and in limited time only once a rope of 5 meters measured from the ground.

    This test aims to determine the suitability of candidates to highlight the essential ideas contained in a file between 10 and 20 pages on a general or professional subject and not to express their personal ideas on the subject. The synthesis, which must not exceed three pages, must be built according to the classic plan of a presentation and be written entirely in a clear and concise style. Only large parts may be preceded by a title.

    1.2.2. Professional concrete case

    This test is intended to determine the suitability of candidates to face a situation likely to be encountered in the exercise of responsibilities within a device or training under one of the two subdivisions of the weapon, as well as to demonstrate their ability to rely on tactics, equipment used by the gendarmerie, regulation, legislation, human resources management and implementation.
    It consists of drafting, with or without the assistance of documentation, a duty on a general question that is relevant to a concrete professional situation, or in answering various questions that may arise at the discretion of the evolution of the problem developed in the concrete case.

    1.3. Foreign language composition test

    This test consists of writing, in the chosen language, with or without the help of documentation, a duty on a topic of news or society. The candidate must deal with the subject for which he opted, among the two proposed.
    The candidate obtaining a rating greater than 8/20 shall, following the admission tests, be given points greater than 8 assigned to the coefficient 10.
    The use of the monolingual or bilingual dictionary is prohibited.
    This test can only be composed in a single language: German, English, Arabic, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

    ASSISTANCE ON ORGANIZED OVERVIEW FROM 2011 TO THE SUB-OFFICIANS OF GENDARMER GENDARTERY TELEVANT LICENCE OF THE GLOBAL OR TECHNOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT OR ANY PART OF THE GLOBALLY

    (3° of Article 6 of Decree No. 2008-946 of 12 September 2008)
    I. - Nature, form and programs of eligibility tests

    Written examinations include:
    – a general culture test (duration: 4 hours); 25 coefficient);
    – an optional test (duration: 3 hours); 15 coefficient);
    – a foreign language composition test (duration: 3 hours); coefficient 10).

    1.1. General culture test

    This test is intended to highlight, in addition to the knowledge and personal ideas of the candidates, their general qualities of style, clarity of mind, judgment and method.
    It consists of drafting, with or without the help of documentation, a duty on a matter of general interest or news.
    The subjects relate to ideas or facts that are essential to the understanding of the modern world.

    1.2. Optional test

    This test shall, at the option of the candidate, bear one of the following:
    ― synthesis of file;
    - Professional concrete case.

    1.2.1. Synthesis of file

    This test aims to determine the suitability of candidates to highlight the essential ideas contained in a file between 10 and 20 pages on a general or professional subject and not to express their personal ideas on the subject. The synthesis, which must not exceed three pages, must be built according to the classic plan of a presentation and be written entirely in a clear and concise style. Only large parts may be preceded by a title.

    1.2.2. Professional concrete case

    This test is intended to determine the suitability of candidates to face a situation likely to be encountered in the exercise of responsibilities within a device or training under one of the two subdivisions of the weapon, as well as to demonstrate their ability to rely on tactics, equipment used by the gendarmerie, regulation, legislation, human resources management and implementation.
    It consists of drafting, with or without the assistance of documentation, a duty on a general question that is relevant to a concrete professional situation, or in answering various questions that may arise at the discretion of the evolution of the problem developed in the concrete case.

    1.3. Foreign language composition test

    This test consists of writing, in the chosen language, with or without the help of documentation, a duty on a topic of news or society. The candidate must deal with the subject for which he opted, among the two proposed.
    The candidate obtaining a rating greater than 8/20 shall, following the admission tests, be given points greater than 8 assigned to the coefficient 10.
    The use of the monolingual or bilingual dictionary is prohibited.
    This test can only be composed in a single language: German, English, Arabic, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

    II. - Nature, form and schedule of admission tests

    Admission tests include:

    Oral tests

    A general fitness test (duration: 50 minutes, 20 minutes of preparation; coefficient 20).
    A professional knowledge test (duration: 50 minutes, 20 minutes of preparation; coefficient 20).
    Sports events with an average rating of 10:
    A swimming test;
    A speed race test;
    A half-ground race test;
    A rope climbing test.

    2.1. Nature, form and program of oral examinations
    2.1.1. General aptitude test

    This trial aims to highlight the suitability of the candidate in the state of gendarmerie with regard to his personality and motivation, as well as his general culture, his faculties of expression and reasoning, his vivacity of mind and his emotional balance.
    It includes:
    ― an individual interview, conducted by a psychologist, to inform the president of the jury on the suitability of the candidate for employment. This interview requires no specific preparation and includes written tests and oral interview;
    an individual interview with the president and the vice-president of the jury. It begins with a 15 to 20-minute presentation on a general theme related to ideas or facts that are necessary for understanding the modern world. He continues in the form of a dialogue with the jury.
    After drawing the subject of the initial presentation, the candidate has a preparation time of 20 minutes.
    For this interview, the president of the jury has, as an indication, the candidate's file.

    2.1.2. Proof of professional knowledge

    The purpose of this test is to verify that the candidate has acquired sufficient knowledge of the content of the texts relating to major professional areas.
    It consists of an interrogation that includes, on the one hand, a presentation on a topic drawn by lot and, on the other, sub-items. After drawing the subject of the presentation, the candidate has a preparation time of 20 minutes.
    Applicants must be interviewed on several topics so that their overall knowledge is objectively evaluated.
    The briefing and sub-items are based on the following program.
    A list will be circulated annually, specifying the texts to be known in the areas related to the general defence organization and to the knowledge of professional texts.

    General organisation of defence in France

    The French concept of defence.
    The policy of nuclear deterrence.
    Major actors (national gendarmerie, army of land, air, national navy).
    The National Gendarmerie: its role in the operational defence of the territory.
    Economic defence.
    Civil defence.

    Knowledge of professional texts

    Organization and employment of units.
    The defense.
    Intelligence.
    The judicial police.
    The administrative police.
    Staff.
    Logistics.
    Telecommunications and IT.

    General criminal law

    The definition of criminal law.
    The definition of the criminal offence.
    The constituent elements of the offence (legal, material, moral).
    Classification of offences (crimes, offences, contraventions).
    The evidence of the offence.
    The punitive attempt.
    The principle of criminal responsibility.
    The criminal responsibility of co-authors and accomplices.
    The aggravating circumstances.
    Causes of irresponsibility or mitigation of criminal responsibility.
    Recidivism and other causes of aggravation of the sentence.
    The actual offence contest.
    Legal causes of exemption or mitigation.
    Extinct sentences and penalties.

    2.2. Nature, form and scale of sporting events
    2.2.1. Swimming test

    It is about swimming in free style, in swimming pool, a distance of 50 meters with or without turns. The candidate may, at his or her choice, plunge, jump or be already in the water in contact with the wall at the time the departure is given. The candidates are in a bathing suit. The only authorized equipment is: bath cap, swimming glasses, pinch and ear caps.
    Competitors are divided by groups of numerical importance as similar as possible and numbered to five swimmers.

    2.2.2. Half ground racing test

    This is a 3000-metre race, carried out on an athletics track, starting online.
    Candidates are in sportswear and footwear are allowed.
    Candidates perform this test by groups of numerical importance as similar as possible and in numbers less than or equal to 15.

    2.2.3. Speed racing test

    This is a 50-metre race on a track and in a corridor, the departure can be made using starting-blocks.
    Candidates are in sportswear and footwear are allowed.
    The candidates perform this test by groups of digital importance as similar as possible.

    2.2.4. Proof of rope climbing

    This is to climb to the smooth rope in free style and in limited time only once a rope of 5 meters measured from the ground.
    The departure is on one foot standing at the initiative of the candidate. The chronometer is triggered when the candidate's second foot leaves the ground. The chronometer is stopped when the candidate touches the 5-metre mark. If the time is 9 seconds for boys and 15 seconds for girls without the 5-metre mark being affected, the candidate is arrested and the height is taken into account according to the given scale.
    The rope is marked every 50 centimeters from 1.5 meters to 5 meters.

    I. - Nature, form and programme
    written proof of eligibility

    Eligibility tests include writing:
    a general culture duty (duration: 4 hours); 30 coefficient);
    – a duty of professional knowledge (duration: 3 hours; coefficient 20).

    1.1. General culture test

    This test is intended to highlight, in addition to the knowledge and personal ideas of the candidates, their general qualities of style, clarity of mind, judgment and method.
    It consists of drafting, with or without the help of documentation, a duty on a matter of general interest or news.
    The subjects relate to ideas or facts that are essential to the understanding of the modern world.

    1.2. Proof of professional knowledge

    This test is to assess the candidate's knowledge of the service, organization and administration of the gendarmerie, and to determine the candidate's ability to formulate synthetic, clear and objective answers on cross-cutting professional issues requiring the inclusion of directives from several texts.
    The test covers five questions that call answers that do not exceed half a page.

    II. - Nature, form and program
    Oral Intake Test

    The admission test consists of an oral interview with a jury (duration: 30 minutes); coefficient: 50).
    2.1. This 30-minute interview is divided into a presentation, followed by an exchange with the jury:

    2.1.1. Briefing
    (duration: 10 minutes/preparation: 20 minutes)

    It is a question of presenting a topic drawn by lot on one of the texts referring to the themes listed below.
    The list of texts is broadcast annually.
    After the presentation of the main topic drawn by lot and prepared for 20 minutes, candidates can also be interviewed on several other topics related to the themes listed below so that their overall knowledge is objectively evaluated:

    The constitutional, legal and regulatory framework
    instructing the action of the gendarmerie

    The principles of public freedoms: freedom to go and come, respect for privacy, freedom of assembly.
    The legislative principles governing computer science and freedom.
    Public order legislation and regulations.
    Relief plans provisions.

    Institutional and community partners of the gendarmerie

    State institutions disconcerned.
    Decentralised local authorities (regional councils, general councils, communities of communes).
    The role of mayors in public safety and order.
    Territorial security and cooperation mechanisms for crime prevention and control.
    The independent administrative authorities: the High Authority to Combat Discrimination and Equality, the National Commission for Informatics and Freedoms.

    Key issues of internal security

    Organized crime and networks.
    Irregular immigration.
    The work is concealed.
    Terrorism.

    2.1.2. Exchange with jury (duration: 20 minutes/without preparation)

    Its objective is to assess the candidate's ability to integrate the ethical and behavioural requirements of an officer's state, to determine his motivation, level of experience, culture and openness, as well as his ability to occupy the jobs that may be entrusted to him.
    For this exchange, the president of the jury has, as an indication, the candidate's file.

    2.2. Endnote

    Any rating equal to or less than 6/20 obtained from this test shall be eliminated.
