Ramsar-Area Güssinger Fischteiche

The centrepiece of the 148 hectare area is the name-giving Güssinger Fischteiche on the edge of the town of Güssing. This pond complex comprises a large main pond as well as-separated from it by dams-three smaller ponds. The area is delineated in the urban area of Güssing, the dividing line between the meadows upstream of the Verlandungsröhricht and the built-up area, as well as in the south-facing district of St. Nikolaus. From St. Nikolaus follow the southern and southwestern area of a Karrenweg trail (marked as a hiking trail) into the valley of the Zickenbach stream, past the district of Rosenberg to the foot of the flood retention dam southwest of Krottendorf. At the Dammfuß the western border runs to the bed of the Zickenbach. Following the river Zickenbach, the northern border runs back to the town area of Güssing, where it passes again before the public bath onto the dividing line between the pond and the built-up area.

In addition to the fish ponds and their extensive vegetation vegetation, the Ramsar site also includes stocks of wet meadows (remnant of the former flood meadows in the valley of the Zickenbach valley) and smaller forest areas, some of which are similar to forest-like areas. The central importance of the Ramsar area lies in the diverse species community, in particular the birds and plants. Here, two bird species classified as globally threatened with moorente and sea eagles are to be found on a regular basis. In addition, the area is home to a number of species of fauna and flora of the Red List, which are essential for the conservation of the biodiversity of the southern Burgenland. The Güssinger ponds are a waterbird's place of national importance. Important deposits of endangered wetland plants can be found in ponds themselves as well as in the adjacent damp meadows (e.g. water nut, yellow Taglilie, pulmonary enciano). This significance is mainly due to the age of the ponds, their large-scale expansion and the associated very near-natural, centuries-grown design of their riverside areas.

The Güssinger ponds also provide an important waterbird resting place on the train path between the Danube/March and the river Danube. Neusiedler See area and the Adriatic Sea.
