FAUNA MARINA

Decree No. 1216/1974

Seize the hunt for wolves, elephants, seals, penguins and similar species.

Bs. As., 19/4/74

Given the need to protect national wildlife, and

CONSIDERING:

Biological research on marine wolf populations and the need to protect such species are being conducted until the results and recommendations of the above-mentioned studies are known.

That the conservation of these animal species should be preserved by the authorities of the Nation, bearing in mind that their frequent migration prevents the allocation, for the purposes of their protection, of specific jurisdiction to a given province.

That in that order of things it is appropriate to limit the provisions of Decree-Law 18.502/69 insofar as it confers on the provinces the exercise of jurisdiction over the adjacent territorial sea and up to a distance of three (3) miles and since this may be opposed to the possibility of prohibiting in all Argentine maritime jurisdiction the hunting of sea lions.

Therefore,

The President of the Argentine Nation

Decrete:

Article 1— The hunting of wolves, sea elephants, seals and penguins and similar species of marine fauna that are determined by resolution of the Secretariat of State of Natural Resources and Human Environment, whether for sport or commercial purposes, is prohibited throughout the territory and territorial sea.

Art. 2o— Please refer to the provisions of Decree-Law 18.502/69 in order to the prohibition set out in article 1 of this Decree.

Art. 3o— This decree will be endorsed by the Ministers of the Economy and the Interior.

Art. 4o— Contact, post, give to the National Directorate of the Official Register and archvese.
