AN ACT to raise Gweru to the status of a City, to enable it to be called a City and to alter the title of the Council of the Municipality of Gwelo.

[Date of commencement: 1st October, 1971.]

WHEREAS it is desirable, in the interests of the community of Gweru, to declare the Municipality of Gwelo to be a City and to alter the name or title of the Council of the Municipality of Gwelo from that of the Municipal Council of Gwelo to that of the City Council of Gweru:

Now, THEREFORE, be it enacted as follows-

1 Short title

This Act may be cited as the City of Gweru (Private) Act [Chapter 29:03].

2 Alteration of status and title of City of Gwelo

The status of Gweru shall be and is hereby altered from that of a Municipality to that of a City and its name or designation from that of the Municipality of Gwelo to that of the City of Gweru.

3 Title of City Council

The title of the Council of the City of Gwelo shall be and is hereby altered from the Municipal Council of Gwelo to the City Council of Gweru.

4 Construction of references

Wherever in any enactment or in any deed, memorandum, agreement or other document, reference is made to-

(a) the Town of Gwelo, the Municipality of Gwelo or the City of Gwelo, such reference shall, where appropriate, be deemed to be a reference to the City of

Gweru;

(b) the Town Council of Gwelo, the Municipal Council of Gwelo or the City Council of Gwelo, such reference shall, where appropriate, be deemed to be a reference to the City Council of Gweru.
