HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 18

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED CAREER OF COACH 1 GENE MURPHY UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS ATHLETIC 2 DIRECTOR OF HINDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE. 3

WHEREAS, Coach Gene Murphy has announced his retirement as 4

athletic director effective February 28, 2021, after dedicating 5

numerous years of illustrious service and extraordinary leadership 6

to Hinds Community College; and 7

WHEREAS, Hinds Community College President Dr. Stephen Vacik 8

stated, "Coach Murphy has been an integral part of the Hinds 9

Community College family and has had a far-reaching influence on 10

athletes that is immeasurable."; and 11

WHEREAS, Coach Murphy served two successful stints as head 12

football coach, the first time from 1987 to 2003 and the second 13

time from 2009 to August 2017; and 14

WHEREAS, with his outstanding leadership abilities, Coach 15

Murphy received the great honor of being named athletic director 16

in July 1997, and he valiantly served in that esteemed position 17

until his imminent retirement; and 18

ST: Gene Murphy; commend and congratulate upon

his retirement as athletic director of Hinds Community College.

WHEREAS, a reflection of his enduring legacy, in the fall of 19

2017, the field at Joe Renfroe Stadium on the Raymond Campus was 20

named Gene Murphy Field in his honor; and 21

WHEREAS, Coach Murphy, whose coaching record included a 22

remarkable four consecutive state championships, has exemplified 23

phenomenal professionalism, ability and integrity, earning the 24

unbridled respect and admiration of all those he encountered, 25

coached and led in his long, successful career; and 26

WHEREAS, Coach Murphy will be dearly missed by all of his 27

colleagues and others who were fortunate to have the opportunity 28

to work with him; and 29

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to 30

pay tribute to great Mississippians, especially those such as 31

Coach Gene Murphy, whose outstanding leadership will always be 32

remembered: 33

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 34

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby 35

commend the distinguished and meritorious career of Coach Gene 36

Murphy upon the occasion of his retirement, and extend best wishes 37

for success in his lighter days ahead. 38

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 39

furnished to Coach Gene Murphy and to the members of the Capital 40

Press Corps. 41
