Roads (Speed Limit) (No. 6) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996

Coming into operation
9th July 1996

The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 50(4)(a) of the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Roads (Speed Limit) (No. 6) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996 and shall come into operation on 9th July 1996.

(2) In this Order “the 1981 Order” means the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981.

Increase of speed limit

2.  The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be increased from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour in relation to the restricted roads specified in Schedule 1.

Reduction of speed limit

3.  The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be reduced from 40 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour in relation to the restricted roads specified in Schedule 2.

4.  The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be reduced from 30 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour in relation to the following restricted road, namely Collingwood Road, Belfast.

Revocations

5.  The provisions described in Schedule 3 are hereby revoked.

Article 2

SCHEDULE 1Restricted roads on which the speed limit is increased from 30 mph to 40 mph

1.  Dowland Road, Unclassified No. 292, Aghanloo, Limavady, from its junction with Windyhill Road, Route B201, to a point approximately 670 metres north-west of that junction.

2.  Cushendall Road, Route A2, Ballycastle, from a point approximately 190 metres east of its junction with Glenshesk Road, Route B15, to a point approximately 900 metres east of its junction with Carrickmore Road.

3.  Belfast Road, Route A23, Ballygowan, from a point approximately 489 metres north-west of its junction with The Square, to a point approximately 1,089 metres north-west of that junction.

4.  Somerset Road, Coleraine.

5.  Barnamaghery Road, Route C274, Darragh Cross, Saintfield, from its junction with Manse Road, Route B6, to a point approximately 410 metres south of that junction.

6.  Darragh Road, Route C274, Darragh Cross, Saintfield, from its junction with Killyleagh Road, Route B6, to a point approximately 520 metres north of that junction.

7.  Killyleagh Road, Route B6, Darragh Cross, Saintfield, from its junction with Darragh Road, Route C274, to a point approximately 410 metres north-west of that junction.

8.  Manse Road, Route B6, Darragh Cross, Saintfield, from its junction with Darragh Road, Route C274, to a point approximately 290 metres south-east of that junction.

9.  Hilltown Road, Route B8, Newry, from its junction with Rathfriland Road, Route A25, to a point approximately 142 metres south-east of that junction.

10.  Rathfriland Road, Route A25, Newry, from a point approximately 51 metres north-east of its junction with Balmoral Park, to its junction with Hilltown Road, Route B8.

11.  Blackpark Road, Unclassified No. 106, Toome.

12.  Creagh Road, Unclassified No. 107, Toome, from a point approximately 220 metres north-west of its junction with Blackpark Road, Unclassified No. 106, to a point approximately 70 metres south-east of that junction.

13.  Kilrea Road, Route B75, Upperlands, from a point approximately 200 metres north-east of its junction with Tirgarvil Road, Unclassified No. 24, to a point approximately 740 metres north-east of that junction.

Article 3

SCHEDULE 2Restricted roads on which the speed limit is reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph

1.  Glen Road, Route A501, Suffolk, Belfast, from a point approximately 90 metres west of its junction with Shaw’s Road, Route C2, to a point approximately 45 metres west of its junction with Suffolk Road.

2.  Edenmore Road, Unclassified No. 270, Limavady, fom its junction with Greystone Road, Route C270, to a point approximately 1,105 metres south-east of that junction.

Article 5

SCHEDULE 3Revocations

1.  Item 1 of Schedule 3 to the Roads (Speed Limit) Order (Northern Ireland) 1977(2).

2.  Item 7 of the Schedule to the Roads (Speed Limit) (No. 2) Order (Northern Ireland 1984(3).

3.  Item 10 of Schedule 1 to the Roads (Speed Limit) (No. 2) Order (Northern Ireland) 1994(4).

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order:
(a)increases from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour the speed limit on the restricted roads specified in Schedule 1 (Article 2);
(b)reduces from 40 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour the speed limit on the restricted roads specified in Schedule 2 (Article 3);
(c)reduces from 30 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour the speed limit on the restricted road specified in Article 4; and
(d)revokes the provisions described in Schedule 3, which are spent (Article 5).
