Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)
These Regulations amend the European Specialist Medical Qualifications Order 1995 (“the 1995 Order”), which implemented European obligations contained principally in Council Directive 93/16/EEC (OJ No. L165, 7.7.93, p. 1) relating to the training of specialist doctors and mutual recognition of their qualifications (“the Directive”). The need for changes to the 1995 Order arises from amendments to the Directive made by Commission Directive 99/46/EC (OJ No. L139, 2.6.99, p. 25).
Schedule 2 to the 1995 Order is amended so as to indicate that clinical radiology (formerly known as diagnostic radiology, and as radiology) and clinical oncology (formerly known as radiotherapy) are now medical specialties common to all EEA states.
