The Police Information Technology Organisation (Additional Bodies) Order 1998

In exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 109(3)(b) of the Police Act 1997(1), the Secretary of State hereby makes the following Order:

1.  This Order may be cited as the Police Information Technology Organisation (Additional Bodies) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 1st April 1998.

2.—(1) The Secretary of State hereby determines that the Police Information Technology Organisation may carry out activities relating to information technology equipment and systems for the use of the following bodies (in addition to police authorities and police forces)—

(a)any body of constables in Great Britain established by statute;

(b)the States of Jersey Police force;

(c)the salaried police force of the Island of Guernsey;

(d)the Isle of Man Constabulary;

(e)any institution or organisation established and maintained by the Secretary of State under the provisions of section 36 of the Police (Scotland) Act 1967(2);

(f)any magistrates' court and, in Scotland, any district court;

(g)any probation committee;

(h)the Legal Aid Board in England and Wales and the Scottish Legal Aid Board;

(i)the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration;

(j)any fire authority;

(k)any body providing ambulance services for the purposes of section 3(1)(c) of the National Health Service Act 1977(3) or section 45 of the National Health Service (Scotland) Act 1978(4);

(l)any body involved in maritime or land search and rescue;

(m)any government department;

(n)the Security Service;

(o)the Secret Intelligence Service;

(p)the armed forces;

(q)the Post Office;

(r)the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority; and

(s)any local authority.

(2) In this Order “local authority” means—

(a)in relation to England and Wales, a county council, a county borough council, a district council, a London borough council, the Common Council of the City of London or a joint authority established under Part IV of the Local Government Act 1985(5); and

(b)in relation to Scotland, a council constituted under section 2 of the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994(6), or a joint board or committee within the meaning of section 235 of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973(7).
