Gaming (Variation of Monetary Limits) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998

To be laid before Parliament under paragraph 3(3) of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974

Coming into operation
9th April 1998

The Department of Health and Social Services, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Articles 77(4), 106(3) and 108(16) of the Betting, Gaming, Lotteries and Amusements (Northern Ireland) Order 1985(1) and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Gaming (Variation of Monetary Limits) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998 and shall come into operation on 9th April 1998.

(2) In this Order “the Order” means the Betting, Gaming, Lotteries and Amusements (Northern Ireland) Order 1985.

Conditions governing gaming for prizes on bingo club premises

2.  In Article 77(1) of the Order—

(a)in sub-paragraphs (b) and (e) for “£30”(2) there shall be substituted “£50”; and

(b)in sub-paragraph (c) for “£0·30” there shall be substituted “£5”.

Maximum charge for playing a game once by means of a gaming machine in a registered club

3.  For the purposes of Article 106(3) of the Order instead of “£0·25”(3) the sum of “£0·30” is hereby specified.

Maximum charge for playing a game once and maximum entitlement to prizes in gaming by means of gaming machines in certain other premises

4.  In Article 108 of the Order—

(a)in paragraph (6) for “£0·25”(4) there shall be substituted “£0·30”; and

(b)in paragraphs (7) and (9) for “£4”(5) wherever it occurs there shall be substituted “£5”.

Revocations

5.  The following are hereby revoked—

(a)Article 4 of the Gaming and Amusements with Prizes (Variation of Monetary Limits) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996(6);

(b)Articles 2 and 3(a) of the Gaming (Variation of Monetary Limits) Order (Northern Ireland) 1995(7).

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order—
(a)increases the maximum money prize which can be distributed or offered in gaming for prizes on bingo club premises from £0·30 to £5;
(b)increases, in any one determination of winners in gaming for prizes on bingo club premises, the maximum permitted aggregate amount taken by way of the sale of chances from £30 to £50 and the maximum permitted aggregate amount or value of prizes from £30 to £50;
(c)increases the maximum charge for playing a game once by means of a gaming machine in a registered club and in certain other premises from £0·25 to £0·30; and
(d)increases the maximum entitlement to money prizes in gaming by means of a gaming machine in those other premises from £4 to £5.
