Education Reform (Amendment) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998

To be laid before Parliament under paragraph 3(3) of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974

Coming into operation
30th July 1998

The Department of Education, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 6(6) of the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

1.  This Order may be cited as the Education Reform (Amendment) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998 and shall come into operation on 30th July 1998.

Amendment to Schedule 2 to the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989

2.  In Schedule 2 to the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989(2) in columns (3) and (4) after the entry “French or German or Italian or Spanish or Irish (A)” there shall be inserted the entry “Irish (in Irish speaking schools only) (A)”.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)
This Order amends Schedule 2 to the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989 to add the compulsory contributory subject “Irish (in Irish speaking schools only) (A)” to the Language Studies Area of Study at key stages 3 and 4.
This Order comes into operation on 30th July 1998.
