The Road Traffic Offenders (Prescribed Devices) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997

The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 23(9) of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

1.  This Order may be cited as the Road Traffic Offenders (Prescribed Devices) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997 and shall come into operation on 1st August 1997.

Prescribed devices

2.  The following devices are prescribed devices for the purposes of Article 23 of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996—

(a)a device designed or adapted for measuring by radar the speed of motor vehicles;

(b)a device designed or adapted for recording a measurement of the speed of motor vehicles activated by means of a light beam or beams;

(c)a device designed or adapted for recording a measurement of the speed of motor vehicles activated by means of sensors or cables on or near the surface of the highway; and

(d)a device designed or adapted for recording by photographic or other image recording means the position of motor vehicles in relation to light signals.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order prescribes, for the purposes of Article 23 of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996, three types of speed detection devices and one device which records the position of vehicles in relation to light signals by photograph or similar means. The three speed detection devices are—
(a)a device for measuring the speed of a motor vehicle by radar;
(b)a device activated by a vehicle passing through light beams; and
(c)a device activated by a vehicle passing over sensors or cables on the road.
