Welfare of Animals (Scheduled Operations) (Amendment) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996

To be laid before Parliament under paragraph 3(3) of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974

Coming into operation
11th December 1996

The Department of Agriculture, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by section 14(3) of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 1972(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

1.  This Order may be cited as the Welfare of Animals (Scheduled Operations) (Amendment) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996 and shall come into operation on 11th December 1996.

Amendment of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 1972

2.  In Schedule 1 to the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 1972 (Operations which may be performed without an anaesthetic)(2) for paragraph 8 there shall be substituted—

“8.  The disbudding of calves by chemical cauterisation applied before the second week of life.”.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)
This Order further amends Schedule 1 to the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 1972. The effect of the amendment is that the disbudding of calves by electro-thermal cautery before the fourth week of life may no longer be performed without an anaesthetic.
