MEMORANDUM ORDER NO. 344

CONSTITUTING A NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ON THE 1992 OBSERVANCE OF THE ARAW NG KAGITINGAN, THE PHILIPPINE VETERANS WEEK AND THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF WORLD WAR II

WHEREAS, Executive Order No. 203, S. of 1987, declared April 9 of every year as a regular holiday for the celebration of Araw ng Kagitingan;

WHEREAS, Proclamation No. 466, S. of 1989, declared the period April 5 to April 11 of every year as Philippine Veterans Week;

WHEREAS, Proclamation No. 130, S. of 1987, designated the period from July 1, 1987 to June 30, 1992 for the Pacific War Veterans Homecoming Program;

WHEREAS, the year 1992 is the fiftieth anniversary of the heroic stand taken by allied forces in Bataan, Corregidor and other battlefields to defend our country against invasion, and of the spontaneous emergence of the Philippine resistance movement when farmers, fishermen, laborers, students and other patriotic volunteers together with survivors of the Philippine defense campaign constituted themselves into guerrilla organizations to carry on the valiant fight for democracy;   ACTISE

WHEREAS, these events should be celebrated to promote, preserve and memorialize the principles, ideals and deeds of Filipino military veterans as a means of enhancing patriotism and love of country, especially among the youth of the land;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, CORAZON C. AQUINO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby order:

SECTION 1. There is hereby constituted a National Executive Committee on the observance of the Araw ng Kagitingan, the Philippine Veterans Week and the Fiftieth Anniversary of World War II in the year 1992, composed of the following:

Secretary of National Defense
Chairman

The Secretary of Tourism Vice-Chairman

Members:

The Secretary of Public Works and Highways

The Secretary of Education, Culture and Sports

The Secretary of the Interior and Local Government

The Secretary of Budget and Management

The Chief of Staff, Armed Forces of the Philippines

The Administrator, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office

The Chairman, National Historical Institute

The Director, Philippine Information Agency

The Chairman, Metropolitan Manila Authority

The Governor, Province of Bataan

The Governor, Province of Cavite

The Governor, Province of Tarlac

The President, Veterans Federation of the Philippines

The National Commander, Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor

The President, VFP Sons and Daughters Association

The National President, Boy Scouts of the Philippines

The National President, Girl Scouts of the Philippines

The Chief, Military Shrines Service

SEC. 2. The Committee is hereby authorized to call upon any department, bureau, office, agency, or instrumentality of the government and to invite any non-governmental organization for such assistance as it may need in the discharge of its duties and functions.

SEC. 3. This Memorandum Order shall take effect immediately.
