RESOLUTION

ON THE 220TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 3 MAY CONSTITUTION AND THE MUTUAL PLEDGE OF THE TWO NATIONS

28 April 2011
Vilnius

The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania,

having regard to the Resolution on the 3 May Constitution, which was adopted by the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania on 19 April 2007;

stating that 2011 sees 220 years of the adoption of the 3 May Constitution, the main statute of the Commonwealth of the two Nations, in 1791 and of the adoption of the Mutual Pledge of the Two Nations aimed at securing mutual relations between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland on 20 October 1791;

emphasising that the 3 May Constitution together with the Mutual Pledge of the Two Nations is the first modern written Constitution in Europe and the second written Constitution in the world;

noting that the 3 May Constitution together with the Mutual Pledge of the two Nations constitute part of the common historical legacy of the States of Lithuania and Poland, which strengthens the historical memory of our nations, inspires political wisdom and helps our citizens to gain better knowledge of the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland,

calls on the society and state authorities to remember and duly commemorate the 220th anniversary of the adoption of the 3 May Constitution, the first written Constitution in Europe, together with the Mutual Pledge of the Two Nations.
