RESOLUTION

ON THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN UKRAINE

 

3 December 2013

Vilnius

 

The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania,

emphasising the long-term historical ties between Lithuania and Ukraine and a long way of both nations to independence;

evaluating a strategic significance for the European Union (EU) of the region which includes Ukraine and other Eastern Partnership countries;

supporting Ukraine's determination to strengthen the political association and economic integration with the E U, progressing towards EU membership;

assessing the political situation in Ukraine after the Eastern Partnership Summit held in Vilnius on 28 – 29 November,

invites Ukraine’s public authorities for a genuine dialogue with the opposition and civil society representatives;

calls on the Ukrainian authorities to refrain from violence against peaceful demonstrators, ensuring respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law;

urges to identify the persons responsible for the use of force against peaceful demonstrators and to assess their actions properly;

calls for the immediate holding in Vilnius of a session of the Assembly of Members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland, and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to discuss the current situation.
