SEIMAS OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA

RESOLUTION
ON THE DRAFT RESOLUTION PROPOSED BY MEMBER OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT EDITE ESTRELA

10 December 2013  Vilnius

The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania,
expressing deep concern over the threat posed by the provisions of the draft European Parliament Resolution on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights proposed by Portuguese Member of the European Parliament Edite Estrela to the constitutional concept of a family and the constitutional right and duty of parents to raise their children as honest persons and loyal citizens and over the conflict between these provisions and European Union law;
taking note that children’s sexuality education is a highly important factor in personality development, but a family is the main social institution, and its right to raise and educate children must be universally recognised, while this process is dependent on parents’ discretion and responsibility;
reminding that, subject to the adoption by the European Parliament of the above Resolution, Member States of the European Union would be called on to ensure that early childhood masturbation contributes to sexuality education and that children under six years of age are aware of intimate relationships among persons of the same gender and children under nine years of age are provided with information about methods of contraception;
stating that the European Union must adhere to the principle of respect for national cultural and religious traditions established by the treaties of accession of Member States to the European Union;
expressing solidarity with international non-governmental organisations protecting children’s rights and freedoms and the child’s right to infancy and childhood,
criticises the Resolution proposed by Member of the European Parliament Edite Estrela and
urges the European Parliament to reject the draft European Parliament Resolution on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights proposed by Member of the European Parliament Edite Estrela and to recognise its provisions as detrimental to the European tradition, law and morals.
