AN ACT
to make new provision in place of the Bankers’ Act 1872; and for
connected purposes.
1 Bank holidays

(1) The days prescribed in accordance with this section shall be bank
holidays.
(2) The Treasury may by order declare that any day specified in the order
shall be a bank holiday.
(3) Where an order has been made under this section, the Treasury shall
cause notice of it to be published in such manner as it thinks appropriate.
(4) An order under this section shall be laid before Tynwald.
2 Payments, etc due on bank holidays

(1) No person shall be compellable to make any payment or to do any act on
a bank holiday which he would not be compellable to make or do on
Christmas Day or Good Friday.
(2) Where a person would, apart from subsection (1), be compellable to
make any payment or to do any act on a bank holiday, his obligation to
make the payment or to do the act shall be deemed to be complied with
if he makes or does it on the next following day on which he is
compellable to make or do it.
3 Amendments and transitional

(1) The enactments specified in Schedule 1 are amended in accordance with
that Schedule.
(2) [Repealed]1

(3) Without prejudice to section 16 of the Interpretation Act 1976, any
reference in any enactment or other document to a bank holiday
(whether by reference to the Bankers’ Act 1872 or not) shall be construed
as a reference to a bank holiday under this Act.
4 Short title and commencement

(1) This Act may be cited as the Bank Holidays Act 1989.
(2) This Act shall come into operation on such day as the Treasury may by
order appoint.2
