Marine Fitter Trade Regulations
made under Section 29 of the
Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act

as amended by O.I.C. 96-268 (April 16, 1996), N.S. Reg. 75/961 (1) In these regulations
(a) "Act" means the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act;
(b) "engaged" means employed or hired for remuneration;
(c) "general regulations" means regulations made by the Governor in Council under the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act that apply generally to all designated trades;
(d) "marine fitter trade" or "trade" means the occupation involved in outfitting and refit of ships and other marine structures and includes the survey, maintenance, repair, overhaul, alteration, fabrication, installation, alignment test and trial of marine engineering systems, equipment and components.
(2) Unless the context otherwise requires, words defined in the Act have the same meaning when used in these regulations.
2 No person shall enter into a contract of apprenticeship either as or with an apprentice in the trade unless the person being apprenticed has successfully completed grade twelve or its equivalent in the course skills required by the trade/occupation.

3 The term of apprenticeship for the trade is four years.
4 The wage of an apprentice during the apprenticeship in the trade shall be no less than the wage prescribed in the following wage schedule and shall include the percentage wage increases to which the apprentice is entitled on successful completion of each six month period as follows:
during the first six months at 50% of the journeyman's rate;
during the second six months at 55% of the journeyman's rate;
during the third six months at 60% of the journeyman's rate;
during the fourth six months at 65% of the journeyman's rate;
during the fifth six months at 70% of the journeyman's rate;
during the sixth six months at 75% of the journeyman's rate;
during the seventh six months at 85% of the journeyman's rate; and
during the eighth six months at 90% of the journeyman's rate.
5 (1) An employer in the trade may employ one apprentice for each certified journeyman employed.
(2) Notwithstanding subsection (1), the ratio of apprentices to journeymen employed by an employer in the trade may be varied from time to time, with the prior written approval of the Minister, where the Minister has determined that the employment situation and the availability of certified journeymen in the trade requires the variation.
6 A person who
(a) satisfies the requirements of Section 19 of the general regulations; and
(b) produces evidence of
(i) five years, or
(ii) four years, where the person has successfully completed a vocational training course approved by the Director,
of practical experience engaged in the trade,
is eligible to be examined for a certificate of qualification as a Marine Fitter.
