PROHIBITION ON FISHING
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority makes the following Direction under section 17(5A) of the Fisheries Management Act 1991 and section 56(1) of the Southern and eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery Management Plan 2003.

1. Citation
This Direction may be cited as SESSF (Closures) Direction 2008
2. Commencement
This Direction commences the day after it is registered on the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments.
3. Application
This Direction applies to a holder of statutory fishing rights in the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery and to a person acting on behalf of the holder.
4. Period of Application
This Direction applies for a period beginning on the date this Direction commences and ending on 1 January 2012.
5. Definitions
An expression used in this direction has the same meaning as in the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery Management Plan 2003.
Automatic baiting equipment - any mechanical operation that automatically positions bait on the hooks without the need for each hook/snood to be individually clipped onto the mainline directly by hand during the setting of the gear.
6. Prohibition on fishing
A person in:
(a) An area described in Schedule 1 is prohibited from fishing using gillnet methods.
(b) An area described by Schedule 2 is prohibited from fishing using hook methods.
(c) An area described by Schedule 3 is prohibited from fishing.
(d) An area described by Schedule 4 is prohibited from fishing using demersal otter trawl gear .
(e) An area described by Schedule 5 is prohibited from fishing using trawl methods.
(f) An area described in Schedule 6, 7 and 8 is prohibited from fishing.
(g) An area described in Schedule 9 is prohibited from fishing using trawl methods.
(h) An area described in Schedule 10 is prohibited from fishing using gillnet methods.
(i) An area described by Schedule 11 is prohibited from fishing.
(j) An area described by Schedule 12 is prohibited from fishing.
(k) An area described in Schedule 13 is prohibited from fishing using gillnet methods.
(l) An area described in Schedule 14 is prohibited from fishing using gillnet methods or holding a permit for the Tasmanian Coastal Waters Sector.
(m) An area described in Schedule 15 is prohibited from fishing using automatic baiting equipment.
(n) An area described in Schedule 16 is prohibited from fishing using hook methods.
(o) An area described in Schedule 17 is prohibited from fishing using demersal otter trawl gear.
(p) An area described in Schedule 18 is prohibited from fishing.
(q) An area described in Schedule 19 is prohibited from fishing using trawl or hook methods.
(r) An area described in Schedule 20 is prohibited from fishing using trawl methods.
(s) An area described in Schedule 21 is prohibited from fishing using trawl methods.
(t) An area described in Schedule 22 is prohibited from fishing using demersal otter trawl gear.
(u) An area described in Schedule 23 is prohibited from fishing using demersal otter trawl gear.
(v) An area described in Schedules 24, 25 and 26 is prohibited from fishing using demersal otter trawl gear.
(w) An area described in Schedule 27 - 35 is prohibited from fishing using trawl methods.
7. To whom do the prohibitions in clause 6 not apply?
The prohibitions in clause six do not apply to a person if the person is fishing in accordance with:
I. another plan of management in force under the Fisheries Management Act 1991 , or a law of a State or Territory that is in force in relation to the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery area; or
II. a scientific permit which gives specific conditions enabling the holder to operate in the specified area of waters.
8. Revocation of SESSF Closures Direction 2007
This Direction revokes SESSF (Closures) Direction 2007 with effect from the commencement of this Direction.
SCHEDULE 1
Murat Bay
The area bounded by the line:
(a) commencing at the intersection of the southern coastline of South Australia at mean low water and the meridian of longitude 133° 50’ 50” east, in the vicinity of Point Brown and running progressively;
(b) north-westerly to the southern most point of the Franklin Island group at the intersection of the parallel of latitude 32° 28’ 20” south and meridian of longitude 133° 37’ 50” east;
(c) then north-westerly to the intersection of the southern coastline of South Australia at mean low water and the meridian of longitude 133° 07’ 36” east, in the vicinity of Point Bell;
(d) then generally easterly and southerly along the mean low water line to the point of commencement.
SCHEDULE 2
Cascade Plateau
The area bounded by a line drawn at a 15 nautical mile radius from the point of latitude 43° 55’ 06” south, longitude 150° 28’ 11” east.

The area bounded by the line:
a) Commencing at the point of latitude 39˚ 00’ 00” south, longitude 143˚ 55’ 00” east and running progressively;
b) east along the parallel of latitude 39˚ 00’ 00” south to its intersection with the meridian of longitude 144˚ 50’ 00”east;
c) then south along that meridian to its intersection with the parallel of latitude 39˚ 30’ 00” south;
d) then east along that parallel to its intersection with the meridian of longitude146˚ 34’ 00”east;

The area bounded by a line:
(a) commencing at the intersection of the southern shore of Kangaroo Island, South Australia, at mean low water with the meridian of longitude 137°16’ 59.0” east and running progressively;
(b) south along that meridian to its intersection with the parallel of latitude 36°00’ 00.8” south;
(c) then easterly to the point 36° 00’ 24.8” south and 137° 19’ 29.0” east;
(d) then southerly along the meridian of longitude 137° 19’ 29.0” east to its intersection with a line every point of which is 1nm off the mean low water line of the coast;
(e) then easterly and southerly along the one nautical mile line to its intersection with the meridian of longitude137°23’ 05.0” east;
(f) then northerly along that meridian of longitude until its intersection with the mean low water line of the coast;
(g) then westerly and northerly along the mean low water line of the coast until the point of commencement.

Pages Island
The area within 1 nautical mile around:
(a) North Page Island located at the intersection of the parallel of latitude 35° 45’ 32” south with the meridian of longitude 138° 18’ 05” east; and
(b) South Page Island located at the intersection of the parallel of latitude 35° 46’ 40” south. with the meridian of longitude 138° 17’ 29” east.

Head of the Great Australian Bight
The area bounded by a line:
(a) commencing at the intersection of the southern shore of the mainland of Australia at mean low water with the meridian of longitude 129° 00’ 08.1” east;
(b) then running south along that meridian to its intersection with the parallel of latitude 31° 44’16.1" south;
(c) then easterly to the point of latitude 31° 44' 16.1'' south, longitude 129° 05' 52.1'' east;
(d) then northerly to the point of latitude 31° 42' 13.1'' south, longitude 129° 05' 52.1'' east;

East Coast Deepwater Trawl Sector Exclusion Zone
The area bounded by a line:
(a) commencing at the point of latitude 24° 29’ 54” south, longitude 155° 30’ east and running progressively;
(b) south along the meridian of longitude 155° 30’ east to its intersection with the parallel of latitude 27° south;
(c) south-easterly along the geodesic to the point of latitude 30° south, longitude 157° east;

South Australian Gillnet Closure – Backstairs Passage
The area bounded by a line:
(a) commencing at the intersection of the southern coast line of mainland Australia at mean low water with the meridian of longitude 137° 40’ 38.96” south in the vicinity of Troubridge Point, South Australia and running progressively;
(b) south easterly along the geodesic to the intersection of the southern coast line of mainland Australia at mean low water with the parallel of latitude 35° 36’ 13.86” east in the vicinity of Cape Jervis;
(c) then generally easterly along the mean low water line of the coast to the intersection of this line with the meridian of longitude 138° 31’ 20.14” south in the vicinity of Newland Head;
(d) then south westerly to the intersection of the coastline of Kangaroo Island, South Australia at mean low water with the meridian of longitude 138° 8’ 4.92” south in the vicinity of Cape Willoughby;
(e) then north westerly along the mean low water line of that coast to the intersection of this line with the meridian of longitude 137° 37’ 55.31” south in the vicinity of Point Marsden, South Australia;
(f) then generally northerly to the point of commencement.
SCHEDULE 11
South Australian Shark Hook and Shark Gillnet Closure – Kangaroo Island
The area bounded by a line:
(a) Commencing at the intersection of the coastline of Kangaroo Island, South Australia at mean low water with the meridian of longitude 138° 8’ 4.92” south in the vicinity of Cape Willoughby and running progressively;
(b) south westerly along the mean low water line to the intersection of this line with the meridian of longitude 136° 42’18.61” south in the vicinity of Cape du Couedic;
(c) then due south from that point along the meridian to its intersection with a line every point of which is 1nm seaward of the mean low water mark;
(d) then generally easterly along that line until it’s intersection with the parallel of latitude of 35° 50’ 29.65” south;
(e) then due west along the parallel to the point of commencement.

South Australian Shark Hook and Shark Gillnet closure – Victor Harbor to the Victorian Border
The area bounded by a line:
(a) Commencing at the intersection of the southern coastline of mainland Australia at the mean low water with the border between Victoria and South Australia and running progressively;
(b) due south along the meridian to its intersection with the outer limit of Coastal Waters;
(c) then generally north westerly along that outer limit to its intersection with the meridian of longitude 138° 38’ 21.01” east;
(d) then north along that meridian to the point of intersection with the mainland at the mean low water line, in the vicinity of Victor Harbor;
(e) then generally south easterly along the mean low water line to the point of commencement.

Gillnet 183m Depth Closure
The area of the Gillnet 183m Depth Closure is the part of the AFZ contained within and bounded by a line commencing at the point on the Adjacent Area Boundary between New South Wales and Victoria, off south-eastern Australia, closest to the point of latitude 37º 35' 54.5" south, longitude 150º 12' 31.8" east (Point 159).
Thence south-easterly along that Adjacent Area Boundary to its intersection with the outer limit of the AFZ, close to the point of latitude 38º 58' 17" south, longitude 153º 46' 43" east.
Thence generally southerly and westerly along the outer limit of the AFZ to its intersection, south of Australia, with the Adjacent Area Boundary between South Australia and Western Australia, close to the point of latitude 35º 19' 14.9" south, longitude 129º 00' 05.2" east.
Thence northerly along that Adjacent Area Boundary to a point closest to latitude 33º 20’ 47.1” south, longitude 129º 00’ 05.1” east, (Point 1).
